question...when you are late to work/take time off to care for your kids...
do you use leave or are you just able to come and go as you please?
In my office, we use leae. either sick or personal. if we don't have it. we don't get paid. if we are out, our work is waiting for us when we get aback. if for some reason we have to be out during a deadline, we talk to each other about coverage.
some things I read make me think there are places that have some sort of special child advantage...like a kid gets you a "get out of work for free" card.
i want to work there!

if I am less then an hour late or leave no more than an hour early, I just make up the time
for anything more than that, I use my PTO

Def not my job. We do get plenty of sick, personal and vacation days. My boss is flexible if I need to work from home I'm allowed, but I try not to push it. Also, if he has a Ped appt I can come in later and I'll just say I'm working through lunch or something

Re: question...when you are late to work/take time off to care for your kids...
I work for the fed gov't like you-so same situation as you-use your leave or leave without pay...the type of job I have though my coworkers would have to pick up my slack so there would be no work left over-unless they were so backed up that everyone would have left over...I know that sounds weird but our work is like daily-stuff that needs to get done that day or the next, not projects with deadlines.
I also can't work from home...which stinks...due to the type of job...my husband also works for the fed govt-but he can work from home.

Not here...I have to account for every minute practically and working through lunch or coming in early doesn't really count.

Ohhhh...I like that! I want to work there. My job is definatley not like that. I have to use my time - even if I'm 5 minutes late - I can use my time or stay later to make it up. Unless my work is urgent and due, it's here waiting for me when I get back.

When my DH left work (Federal job) to take care of DD, he ALWAYS had to use his sick time. I don't know where these magical places are either that just let you come and go as you please. I'm in school now so I guess I don't count to answer this question.

Re: question...when you are late to work/take time off to care for your kids...
It depends how late/how early it is as to if I use PTO or if I just make up the time (it's this way for anything you need to do - kid related or not).

Re: question...when you are late to work/take time off to care for your kids...
when I was working I was late pretty much every day, nothing was ever said to me about making the time up. if DS had a doc appt, I would just take the day bc my doc office closes early.

Re: question...when you are late to work/take time off to care for your kids...
My job is flexible--as long as I get it done and am there for important meetings, no one complains. That said, my Mondays are full of meetings--if DS is sick on Monday I CANNOT take off. I run the meetings.
I work from home 2 days a week, and really don't abuse it the 3 days I am in the office, but have left an hour early without using leave. If it is an entire half day, I take the 1/2 day. I have 75 sick days accumulated and 45 vaca days, so it's not an issue if I do have to take a 1/2 day.
I love the situation, so I am staying in my job, though I am overqualified and could get something higher paying.

Re: question...when you are late to work/take time off to care for your kids...
My place is pretty flexible. If it's less than an hour on either end of the day, it's pretty much a wash. If it's going to be more than that, it's PTO and can NOT come from our sick time. It's either vacation/personal time. Unpaid time off is not allowed.
Our sick leave policy explictly prohibits us from using sick time to care for family members. We get around it by lying and telling our bosses that WE are sick and then we get paid and no one asks questions.
DH's co. is fine with him using sick time to care for DCs.

Re: question...when you are late to work/take time off to care for your kids...
I don't get to use my sick days unless *I* am sick which SUCKS because I usually have an abundance of sick time and a serious shortage of personal/vacation time... which is all I can use.
It's PTO or I don't get paid.

I'm sure there would be a lawsuit by CF employees, since it is a form of discrimination.
DW is a SAHM, but if I have to take off/go in late for any reason, if I can't make up the time, I take personal time.

Re: question...when you are late to work/take time off to care for your kids...
My job is pretty flexible... as long as my work gets done, that is what matters.
I can't complain - I work from 9:30 - 5:30 and spend 1.5 hrs a day pumping (3x for 30 min total b/t set-up and break down). But I always eat lunch at my desk / work through lunch. I also work from home on Fridays and nurse DD when I would usually pump.
If I am going to be out of the office for more than a few hours (dr. appt etc), I will take a 1/2 vacation day. Otherwise, I just make sure my work gets done, even if I work on a weekend.
I feel very lucky.

Re: question...when you are late to work/take time off to care for your kids...
Since I went PT, I only get paid when I work. When I was FT, when DD was sick and I needed off, they counted them as vacation days.

Re: question...when you are late to work/take time off to care for your kids...
I've never taken any days off because DS was sick but I've taken a lot of half days to take DS to the doctor. No one seemed to mind. I think if I took a full day off, it would probably be considered paid time off.

I'm a teacher and my contract gives my unlimited sick time, but no personal time. So if I have to take a day off when Lily is sick, I have to call in sick. I can't say what it's for....but I do get paid.
