Re: question...when you are late to work/take time off to care for your kids...

The DOE doesn't allow teachers to use sick days to take care of their ill children unless it's one of those crazy childhood diseases like whooping cough or scarlet fever or rubela. Then you get excused days after you submit mountains of paper work. It used to include pink eye, but now if you have pink eye, you gotta go to work. Nice. Of the ten sick days NYC teachers have, 3 can be used as personal days, which is where these child caring days would fall. But for me, I just call in sick. I don't need or want them knowing my business!

Re: question...when you are late to work/take time off to care for your kids...

I'm salaried and pretty much as long as we put in half a work day we get paid for the day. There have been a few (maybe 3 times) that I have left during/after lunch either cause I was sick or DD was sick and I got paid for the entire day. However it also means that if I come in early and stay past 5pm then I do not get paid for that as well. I'm generally at work between 8:30/8:45am (I start at 9am) and I almost never leave before 5:30/5:45pm. My boss knows I get my work done and I don't take advantage of coming in late/going home early.

do you use leave or are you just able to come and go as you please?

In my office, we use leae. either sick or personal. if we don't have it. we don't get paid. if we are out, our work is waiting for us when we get aback. if for some reason we have to be out during a deadline, we talk to each other about coverage.

some things I read make me think there are places that have some sort of special child advantage...like a kid gets you a "get out of work for free" card.

i want to work there!

we use our "days", or work through lunch, no one handles my work when Im gone unless its for an extended period of days. I was issued a laptop as a mom, and this is the only reason, so for days when I stayed home with DS while he was sick I could still get some work done.

If we are out of time, which happens, between days I need to take bc Im sick, for instance so far THIS YEAR, Ive had the flu and a stomach virus, and DS has been sick.

I certainly do not get a "get out of work for free card."

if ds is sick and i'm staying home i take sick. if its cause of snow, or his school is closed i take pt or vac.

Luckily I can work from home. It is one of the few perks of my job. Although if DS is really sick and I can't work from home I can take a day off

I take paperwork home with me. As long as I get the work done I don't have to use any of my time. If one of the kids are really sick I will do the paperwork when DH gets home so I can save my time.

Re: question...when you are late to work/take time off to care for your kids...

Generally speaking I use my own time. If I have to leave a little early or take an extra 15 on my lunch they don't 'dock' me for it.. but that's because I am a salaried employee and also have no problem working through lunch or staying longer if I need to get things done.

Re: question...when you are late to work/take time off to care for your kids...

Im able to leave work for an hour or so and take my kids to Dr. apts, or work through my lunch and leave an hour early(without my salary being docked).... but "calling in sick" is not an option for me...

I have sick and personal time, however Im really not "allowed" to use it, unless its scheduled in advance...

Earlier this year my older child had h1n1, and thank goodness DH gets "dependent care" at his job, and was able to take a week paid to care for him.

Since I went PT, I only get paid when I work. When I was FT, when DD was sick and I needed off, they counted them as vacation days.

same for me

We are allowed to make up time for a few hours....more than that, I have to use PTO. For instance, if I come in 2 hours late due to a doc appt, I work through lunch for 2 days.

Re: question...when you are late to work/take time off to care for your kids...

I'm an executive and my position affords me a lot of flexibility.

I don't have set hours and I don't clock in, I generally work from 8 or 8:30 to 4:30 or 5.

If DC are sick, I take the day (sick or vacation) or occasionally work from home.

I don't have to make up time if I am late or leave early or if I take the kids to a doctor appointment or volunteer at their daycare or have my own appointments, etc.

I have projects and meetings so it's not as though it's not disruptive to my work so I don't abuse it. I schedule appointments around my calendar and if something big is going on and one of the kids is sick, I'll see if DH can take the day instead.

Of course, everything have trade offs. I have a work issued laptop and blackberry and am expected to be reachable 24/7. If something big is going on at my firm, I could be on a conference call at 4 am on a Sunday. I've also stayed really late to work on various projects. Generally, 5-9 is the sacred time in our house and my team knows that-unless I make arrangements with DH ahead of time I cannot stay past 5-nor do I want to. from 5-9 I'm with the kids (dinner, playing, bath, bedtime). After 9, I'm available for a conference call if need be. It doesn't happen often, but it's the trade off for have soooo much flexibility.

If i need to take a day off, then I will need to take a personal/vacation day.

But if i need to come in late or leave early, I just come and go. They still pay me for it.

Re: question...when you are late to work/take time off to care for your kids...

I am very lucky.

I work from home 90% of the time and only go in once or twice a week for a few hours to finalize jobs or if I reeeallly need to get things like faxes or copies done.

I have a very flexible job.

If I had to take off a day b/c he's sick, I'd have to use a personal/sick day or vacation day.
When I've had to take him to the Dr. I have tried to schedule it for late in the afternoon so I can skip lunch and leave early. Otherwise I'd have to take the hours out of my personal time.

I am very lucky to have the job that I have...

I work for one of the biggest investment firms in the world but contrary to that I can do basically what I want...as long as my job gets done I am ok..no need to report to anyone......I had 7 months paid maternity leave, get 4 weeks vacation and 3 weeks sick days which I can use anytime I need.......

I have to use my days off or take a 1/2 a day of my personal time off.

My only other option would be FMLA which is unpaid.

Before this boss, my other boss let us work from home for any reason from a kid sick to workmen coming to your house. I did see some people take advantage but they were non-parents & parents alike.

Jess, I have the same deal here, except there is no one to cover for me (other than my supervisor in an emergency). We all have our own caseloads, and since my job involves investigating clients and writing reports, no one else can do that for me (with VERY few small exceptions).

It's the nature of civil service! Chat Icon

I actually had my OBs office yell at me that I needed to "work something out with my job" because they had no appointments for after work and I needed to come in before 5pm. They just did NOT understand that I can't take time off if I don't have it, or I don't get paid. There is no "working out" of anything.

ETA: While part of me would appreciate the flexibility of being able to come in late or leave early, I do like the fact that time and leave is equal for everyone, parents and non-parents alike.

This is my set up as well! I have lots of flexibility but I definitely put in my time before I had a family.

I use sick leave. I really can't be late since I am a speech therapist in a school.. but, they are pretty understanding if you are.. regardless of the reason.. kids or not. But, if I have to leave.. I take the half day or whatever.
I have to find coverage for meetings.

Re: question...when you are late to work/take time off to care for your kids...

It is up to my boss - I am pregnant with #2 now and with both of my pregnancies, he was great letting me go to the dr and not taking time. If I have to leave early for my son, I do and I don't get docked, but I very, very very rarely call out. I think he realizes that I am never out, so when I do have to leave early, he cuts me some slack.

Federal employee here, so I have to use sick or vacation leave, or my credit hours that I accrue during a pay period.

I have to admit, there are certain perks for parents - like, I get admin time to participate in school trips or events, and I also get admin time for parent-teacher conferences, that a non-parent wouldn't be able to use.

I work from home 95% of the time, but for a company - I'm not self employed. SO I do have a lot of flexibility. My arrangement is that I work 21 hours a week. SO how I work those hours is up to me. However, I have my DC in daycare for 3 full days (M, W, F) and my bosses know that I'm working business hours those days. If school is delayed or closed on my assigned work day, I have to make the hours and let them know I'm not available. They don't really care, but I have to make up the hours because I don't get any vacation/sick time. I spend 3 nights last week working late after the kids went to bed to make up for the snow day last week and a few delayed opennings. So there's good and bad. Can't have it all! Oh and when I do work I need to account for all my time. SO there's no slacking.

My job is pretty flexible w/ the leaving early/coming in late situations. I'm salaried, so I don't have to "make up" time. But I also wouldn't go out to lunch that day - because I think that's taking advantage.

It's really based on workload. If I'm busy and I HAVE to leave early for any reason, then I'm working from home or wherever I am (via bb or laptop).

If it's an all day thing - then I have to use vaca/sick time.
