Quick Question - Getting Gas with Baby in Car

What do you do when it's REALLY hot?

Leave car on with air?

Turn off car and put down windows? I feel like I'd rather not have windows down with the gas fumes...

Thanks!

Re: Quick Question - Getting Gas with Baby in Car

Roll the windows down.
I'd rather there were some gas fumes for a few minutes rather than take the chances of what could happen if the car is running.
I never, ever, leave the keys in the car when I am getting gas, let alone with the babies in the car.
Plus there is the added danger of an explosion if you leave the car on.

Re: Quick Question - Getting Gas with Baby in Car

It only takes me a couple minutes-I don't even roll the windows down (I don't want to let in gas fumes). If I have the AC on before we stop, usually the car stays pretty cool during the few minutes it takes to fill up.

yeah me too, now that hes older he likes to get out and "help".

I would think fumes are safer than being closed up in a hot car.

Re: Quick Question - Getting Gas with Baby in Car

I rarely have to get gas with DD in the car, but if I did, I'd blast the air for a few minutes prior to getting to the gas station, then I'd get out and pump the gas with the windows up and doors locked (car shut off).

I try to avoid the gas fumes too.

Re: Quick Question - Getting Gas with Baby in Car

that seems like a no brainer to me -
You turn the car OFF to pump gas - I'd never even consider pumping gas w/ the car running !!!

so you open the window .............

Re: Quick Question - Getting Gas with Baby in Car

Windows down, but since I work FT, I generally try to gas up when he isn't with me (like right after I drop him at daycare or on my lunch hour)

Re: Quick Question - Getting Gas with Baby in Car

Because all the gas stations near me are self serve, and I refuse to pay extra to use a debit card - I do not get gas with DC in the car.

Re: Quick Question - Getting Gas with Baby in Car

Windows up. Don't want fumes getting into the car, and if the car is comfortable when you stop, there's no way it's getting too hot in the minute or two it takes to fill the tank.

ETA: I've also seen stories about people snatching purses from the front seat of cars with their windows open or doors unlocked. Especially if the gas door is on the driver's side.

Re: Quick Question - Getting Gas with Baby in Car

Leave windows down. This is also what I do at full serve gas stations if it is hot out. I never leave the car on.

Re: Quick Question - Getting Gas with Baby in Car

I turn the key on aux (?) so the radio and a/c is on but the car is not "running." My door is cracked so I don't get locked out by accident. Is that bad?? I pay by cc so I'm not leaving the kids alone at all.

I guess I never gave this much thought. I just wouldn't leave them alone to go in and pay.
