Radio Topic - strange gifts received
On 98.3/96.1 today they were talking about strange gifts you have received (or given)... let's have the LIF version:

In HS my boss gave me a very nice bottle of liquor... no idea what he was thinking - didn't drink then.
Another boss gave me a chia pet - I returned it to K-mart and got a pair of jeans. (college)

The strangest gift we've gotten was actually recently given to my son from my crazy MIL  My DS is 4 months and his first name and middle name are very Irish sounding even though both DH and I are Italian. (We just really liked the name). Anyways when DS was born my MIL bought him a whole bunch of Irish knick-knacks...shamrocks and 4 leaf clovers and things like that. I was like  . When DH said to his mom "Uh mom we're not Irish" Her response was "well his name is Irish sounding." I would have no problem with those items if we were actually IRISH...but we're not

I am not sure if I would consider it a "gift", but I was asked to babysit two kids for an entire day once. It was pre-arranged such that I took the day off from work, etc. She told me I would be paid for the day. When it was all said and done, she paid me with a BIRDHOUSE!!! No money, a friggin birdhouse!!!

This one we always talk about in our family.......
SIL and BIL received these HUGE nativity figures (the kind that go on your front lawn) for their wedding from a very-Jewish couple.
SIL and BIL are both Catholic but we just found it to be such an odd wedding gift.

When we got engaged, DH's great aunt and uncle gave us a rather large, brightly colored ceremaic rooster pitcher. There was no receipt attached to it so the general consensus was that they must be "into" roosters and had an extra one lying around. By far the weirdest gift I have ever gotten.

For my bridal shower, MIL got me gifts for my dogs. Definitely not something I had registered for! I don't even know how to describe what they are, but basically they're some sort of "dog vest" that she had embroidered with their names. It doesn't reflect, doesn't keep them warm, and has no obvious function. Apparently she was on an embroidery kick because she also had our wedding invitation embroidered onto this cloth that we can frame and hang up, as well as more cloth that I guess are supposed to be dish towels and have our names on them with pictures of cappuccino and hot chocolate.

A friend of the family gave us rooster salt and pepper shakers when we bought our house. She told us they are supposed to symbolize "money".
She gave a set to my SIL as well when she bought her house.

one of my father's friends gave DH & I one of those plastic table cloths that say FLORIDA on it w/oranges all over it........for our WEDDING!

Just saw a commercial so I was reminded of one:
Our ILs got all of us Snuggies one year. Not for any occasion, just as a "practical" gift. Mine and DH is currently folded up in our basement somewhere.
