Random question for the buyers
If you were buying a house that had an alarm system, is that something you would continue with, or would you want the sellers to remove it?

Re: Random question for the buyers
We are buying a house with an alarm and keeping it ... and then getting the contract renewed and having them come in to make updates, if needed.

Re: Random question for the buyers
what's the purpose of removing it? the only reason I would do that is if the system was very old and outdated.

honestly, I don't know . We're having some issues with our buyer regarding the alarm system.
Also, the system was just updated in mid-2006 and includes fire and carbon monoxide detection.

Re: Random question for the buyers
Thanks guys! I just don't get it - the buyer is making a federal case out of the alarm system. Today alone I got 2 phone calls about it. I really kinda thought it was a no-brainer.
Everything else has gone really, really smooth, so I have no idea where this is coming from.

I wouldn't ask the buyer to remove it. I might choose not to renew the contract, but it wouldn't keep me from buying the house.
Sounds like someone who thinks it's a total buyers market and you will do whatever they ask because you have a potential buyer.

Re: Random question for the buyers
Crazy buyers. I wouldn't remove it for them.
I guess with the market the way it is people feel they can make crazy demands. We had one couple who wanted us to repaint our co-op for them--we had just repainted the whole thing--white. Not everyone's favorite color, but easy to change. We never addressed the request because our final buyers came through with an offer at the same time, but I remember thinking .
Good luck--I hope you can both resolve the issue!

Re: Random question for the buyers
I would think having an alarm system already installed is an added bonus? DH and I loved the fact that ours was already installed in the house. We just continued the existing contract with the alarm company. I don't understand why someone would not want to leave it installed...even if they don't plan on using it.

That's strange. I wish our house had one already when we bought it!

I would keep it...but it is basically a plus if the house has it-i'm not looking for a house that already has one.

Re: Random question for the buyers
Maybe they don't understand alarms, and think you can break into their house if they keep your alarm?
I would keep the alarm, unless I had my heart set on a particular alarm company (family member or friend worked for them, for example.... a little awkward if your spouse is an alarm installer for Slomin, and you have an ADT alarm in the house.... )

That's what I was thinking. Misinformed buyers can lead to headaches.

I think that there is a problem with just "not renewing the contract." I vaguely remember looking into it when i bought a house by myself (single girl) but if i were to sell, the new homeowners would have to keep the contract, or i'd have to pay the X number of years left on my contract... (free installation for 5 years of continued monitoring).
Could this be why the buyer is wigging out about the alarm?

This is a BIG part of the problem. If she doesn't come to some kind of decision by closing, if she wishes to reactivate, the alarm company is going to commit her to a full 5 years. If she assumes our contract, she only has about 34 months left (at our rate). She keeps going back and forth and at this point, may hold up the closing because both attorney's are going to want to review the assignment form from the alarm company. On our end it's irrelevant, because we already signed up with the same company for our new house, so they won't be pursuing us for the time left on the old contract.
I think she's panicked about the money, and I'm trying to be understanding, but if montly alarm fees are stressing you out, what is the rest of home ownership gonna do?? This is just a drop in the bucket!

I would keep it and update it if needed. Our house didn't come with one so we put one in.
