Reading to your kids ... on an Ipad? What are you thoughts?
I was reading this article, about Target promotion to give away Ipads Article
I haven't had my coffee yet, but I'm just confused. This is probably better for older kids like over 3 age? right?

My 2 year old LOVES her iPad books. She can work that thing better then me(it is DH's)
ETA: Ipad books are obviously in addition to reading her regular books. It is just another activity!!

My 2 year old LOVES her iPad books.
I was going to say the same thing. My kids have quite a collection of games, stories/books and educational apps.
My two year old can tell you all about the solar system from the '8 planets' app - he'll give you facts about the planets, the letter they start with and what number they are from the sun. All introduced to him in a game format.
They (4 and 2yrs) play with it more that I do. They're "reading along" to Toy Story right now.

So what age would you introduce it, at 2 years?

For a short time (~1m), we read a bunch of books to toddler DS on the iPad. He was always more interested in other apps and enjoyed moving screens around himself that we didn't think he was getting the same out of it as if we read him a normal book so we stopped.
DH will sometimes show him little clips of thomas the train or animal shows on youtube but generally we try to keep the iPad away from DS.

My ds loves it. Ipad has a bunch of age appropriate apps for kids. It is a battle when WE actually want to use it.

My DD is 20 months and she plays games on our ipad. I think she knows how to work it better then my DH & I. She has an Olivia game, a moose & zee game and an alphabet game.

Re: Reading to your kids ... on an Ipad? What are you thoughts?
DS is 16 months and loves using my mom's iPod - knows how to work it so well it's scary...BUT IMO reading a child an actual book is invaluable. There's so much they gain from the feel of the book, the colors and textures on each page, having to use their imaginations, flipping back and forth and asking questions, etc - even picking one off a shelf. IMO that can't be replaced.
we don't have an iPad and I'm sure it has some really useful and fun stuff on it for children, but I don't think I would use it in place of a book for story time.

I totally agree! I want to keep the technology addiction away from DS as long as I can. Plus, I don't know how good it is for DS eyes. I'm on the computer alot for work, and I know it has affected my eyes.

That's how I feel also. I also worry about the radiation from objects close, such as laptops, Ipads, etc. No one knows down the line if they may cause harm to our bodies.
JMO though, for my own DD

Re: Reading to your kids ... on an Ipad? What are you thoughts?
We have 2 ipads so we allow DS to play with one of them. He mostly plays games though, no books. We read actual books all day long. I see no big deal with using the ipad to read, how it is different from TV really?

Re: Reading to your kids ... on an Ipad? What are you thoughts?
As a first grade teacher, I can see this as a problem.
It is a very important skill that kids learn the front of the book, back of the book, how to turn pages. This seems like reading an actual book will become a lost skill. I can see many kids coming into kindergarten or 1st grade lacking this skill. And having NO interest in reading regular books on classroom libraries. It is going to be like how kids write in texting slang on homework. So many do not know how to really write.

I feel the same way. Our kids are going to spend so much time in their futures on computers I do worry about the effects on them. I also think that holding an actual book has a lot of positives. We have an ipad but I won't be letting dd read off it.

Re: Reading to your kids ... on an Ipad? What are you thoughts?
I don't think we'd ever stop reading actual books... There's nothing like snuggling on the couch or in bed with the kids and reading a good book. At the same time, I don't see a problem using an iPad also. DH and I both have iPads and the kids are very proficient at using them. When we are in the car, my older son will read with one while my younger son will play educational apps on the other. It's great when we travel because we can still read to them regularly and not have to lug books.
