reasons for a c-section?
what are the usual reasons why you would need a c-section? I understand emergencies are emergencies but why would you need to schedule one ahead of time, what are the "requirements" in other words?? just curious

Re: reasons for a c-section?
For me my daughter was scheduled because she was in a breech position that could not be turned nor did she come out it. They scheduled me and did an ultrasound 5 minutes before they started the surgery, if she had moved they would have canceled. With #2 I am scheduled because I had one with my daughter and since I have no idea what to expect from labor and I do know what to expect with a c-section I just opted to go that way and #2 was in a franks breech for quite awhile but has now turned.

Re: reasons for a c-section?
I will be scheduled for a c-section because I have already had one (it was an emergency). My doc will not do a VBAC.

Re: reasons for a c-section?
I heard that small people sometimes get them from being too small to deliver because the baby can get trapped on the way out. I don't know how true this is though.

no, not at all. my first was a c/s simply because he was breech. My second child I was able to have a vaginal birth with (VBAC).

Re: reasons for a c-section?
I had a c-section because my pelvis was too narrow for DD to fit through. Next time I will also be having a c-section because I refuse to be in labor for 28 hours again and have the same result!

Re: reasons for a c-section?
My DD was a week overdue when I was induced. I was in painful labor for 2 days and never dilated passed 3 cm. Then I got a fever and my blood pressure went up, so I finally had a c-section. She weighed 9 lbs.
With this baby, I am having a scheduled c-section. I wouldn't have it any other way- based on my passed experience.

Re: reasons for a c-section?
I was induced but not necessarily "scheduled for a c-section", it did wind up in a c-section. I was induced due to a blood disorder that I have and I had to stop taking the blood thinner a certain amount of time prior to birth so that I could get the epi
I never dialated past a fingertip so I wound up with a c-section, dd was 9lb, 8oz

I don't think you sound like a moron at all. If you have no knowledge about c-sections then it's scary to hear that you are going to be cut open. As common as it is, it is still major surgery!! The more you know about it the more 'comfortable' (for lack of a better word) you are with it.
Is if my first choice to have had one or to be having one again, nope but it's all I know at this point and the fear of the unknown and possibly suffering for all of those hours only to result in a c-section again scares me more.
Asking questions is always a good thing!!!
Also as Trish said 1 c-section does not necessarily guarantee another.

Re: reasons for a c-section?
my reason for having a c-section is mostly because it is what i prefer. Odd, i know.. I have a mild heart condition and it makes me nervous, being that I was hospitalized for it about 3 years ago and was on meds for a long time. Now that Im no longer on meds for it.. it really shows NO reason to not have a vaginal birth. I just feel safer to have my body under less stress cause if my body is under less stress so is my DD. Im scared of the aftermath though.. but that will be my own body healing and at least DD should be fine, which is more important to me. My doctor did approve of this and agreed.

Usually the baby being big is not a reason. I had a 9lb 10 oz baby without an episiotomy without any problems. I had the baby out in 3 pushes.

Re: reasons for a c-section?
I had an emergency c-section for a combo of reasons, not one in particular. First they found meconium in the water when they broke my water. They let me continue because the test they ran determined the baby did not swallow any. After pushing for 2 hours the baby was not moving at all and then her heart rate started dropping so that was the final thing and they wheeled me into the OR within minutes of that happening.
As far as always having a c-section, my doctor is all for doing VBAC's. I would suggest talking to your doctor beforehand and find out what their opinion of it is. I know the risk of a VBAC is rupturing the uterus but there is less than 1% chance of that happening. C-section's also have risks so for me it's worth the chance and as of now I am going with a VBAC unless my doctor tells me otherwise.

Re: reasons for a c-section?
I had a scheduled c-section and it was my first baby. I have a flat pelvis and the OB felt that there was very little chance I would be able to deliver vaginally without seriously hurting myself or the baby

Re: reasons for a c-section?
In my situation my Dr. could "tell" at my 38 week appointment that DS would be a section because of his position...he was extremely high up and not dropping at all! The morning of my 39 week appointment my water was breaking (trickles) went to the Dr. (they wanted to examine me before the hospital) and was told they could induce me, but were 99% sure it would result in a section anyway because of DS position (still very high and did not drop at all) so they sent me to the hospital for a "scheduled section" that day.

Perhaps not usually but it does happen.
Because DS was big (for me), I had some very painful complications for the last month of my pregnancy (had to have surgery 5 days before I delivered). His size both caused the complications which led to a c-section and, as we learned during the surgery, also would have led to a c-section just because of his size. Per my doctor, there was no way he was going to pass through the birth canal.
I will opt for the c-section for each of my next children because VBACs scare the bejesus out of me.

It depends on your body type. someone with a bigger frame may have no problem delivering a baby this size. someone with a small /narrow pelvis woudl need a c section.

Re: reasons for a c-section?
I don't think it is possible to list all the reasons for c-sections or to know exactly who qualifies for a VBAC. I had a planned C-section because I had a prior surgery in which they had to enter the uterine cavity. On the outside, my surgical incision was just like the one done for a C-section. On the inside, the cut that had to be made is one in which the chance of future uterine rupture is on the high side. In fact, just going into labor was considered risky for me and I had to deliver 4 weeks early.
