Recent Winthrop BF mommies...

My friend just delivered her baby at Winthrop yesterday and planned to BF. I went to visit her last night, and the nurses AND LC were so unsupportive it was ridiculous!!!!

I'm delivering there and now I'm worried that I'll be given a hard time about doing what I want/plan to do. Does anyone have recent experience?

TIA!!!!

Wow, really? DD was born in November, and I thought the LCs and the nurses were wonderful overall.

What did (or didn't) the nurses do to make your friend feel they weren't supportive?

Tell her to ask for Betty! That woman is a gift from God. The other woman was an insane bf monster. Chat Icon

I was there visiting--so I witnessed the nurses reprimanding her for not supplementing with formula. They kept coming in asking how many ounces of formula they gave the baby. She kept saying NONE b/c I am breastfeeding!! The nurse just rolled her eyes and walked out, only to come back an hour later and have the same convo.

There are no medical issues with the baby, so no reason why they'd insist on supplementing.

I called her and told her to ask for Betty the LC! Hopefully she's better--and I'll know that for when my time comes.

that is awful!!! I never heard of that...what a shame..and no wonder moms who really want to BF give up when they think they are not giving their lo's enough Chat Icon

I gave birth to my 1st two at LIJ and had wonderful experiences..but we switched for this one to be at Winthrop this time...I hope I don't regret that decision...

I hope for your friend it was that one nurse that must have been having a very bad day Chat Icon

Chat Icon I'd be so annoyed if that was me! Your friend should say something.

We had one incident where they accidentally gave DD formula hen they were supposed to bring her to me. (I was in recover after a rough c-section, so her first feeding was from a bottle; her second was supposed to be BM). I lost my $h!t on the nurse, and then complained (loudly) to every other nurse on duty. Each one of them put a sticker on DD's bassinet; she had four orange dots and an index card that said "Breastfed!" Lol.

I can't remember the LC's name, but I worked with the LC from the NICU. She was amazing. Tell your friend that that nurse is a moron and she CAN BF her baby!

Re: Recent Winthrop BF mommies...

Let me say this...I had 2 kids at Winthrop...m MIL is a midwife there...the old lactation consultant was a monster...I had her with my first...As a dietitian I thought I knew it all...and I knew nothing...even after reading every BF book out there. So I couldn't unlatch my son...after 1 hour..so I asked her how...she said NEVER! He needs it...anyway...my boobs were pained..bleeding...ugh. Next day..had the younger lady (think Betty)...She fixed me right up!

Re: Recent Winthrop BF mommies...

I have 2 friends that gave birth at Winthrop this year. They had fantastic things to say about the nurses in the New Life Center... except when it came to breastfeeding. They both said that they felt they didn't get any help in that area.

I'm taking Lamaze classes now and Betty the LC is the teacher. She told me that Winthrop has only two LC's - her and another lady. She said that the LC's only get called in when the mom is having a problem and need special help, like when the baby is a preemie or there are multiples. Other than that, the L&D nurses are supposed to advise you. Well, according to my 2 friends, the L&D nurses were a waste in that area (but again, fabulous in all other areas). So if I have a problem with latching or something, I'm going to specifically ask for Betty. I like her. BTW, someone mentioned her being "young" - she's actually a grandmother and probably in her 60's, if that helps you find her!

Re: Recent Winthrop BF mommies...

I just had my last Lamaze class with Betty, and she mentioned how they had 44 babies in the nursery at Winthrop yesterday. The average is about 20! And of the 44, 37 mothers were breastfeeding. That might explain why your friend felt like she didn't get personalized attention.

Hoping for a slower day when I deliver... Chat Icon

I had a terrible experience with some of the nurses at Winthrop and I am considering writing a letter.

I asked for a lactation coach 3 times and basically had to beg for help. Not supportive at all!!

Re: Recent Winthrop BF mommies...

I had a horrible experience with the NICU nurses when I was trying to BF DS (we had terrible latching issues). They bullied me into supplementing with formula a few times and made me cry on several occasions. Definitely ask for Betty the LC. She was a godsend and my biggest advocate with those nasty nurses. She will help you through it. Good luck!

I just delivered there 8 weeks ago and had a good experience. Betty was super helpful, spent 40 minutes going over stuff with me and watching the baby nurse. I actually had the opposite experience because I wanted them to supplement one feeding the 2nd night. They gave me a hard time saying it would hurt my breast feeding, it didn't at all and I got a little sleep.

Re: Recent Winthrop BF mommies...

The LC were probably among the only people I didnt have a problem with at Winthrop...and the hospital was a zoo when DS was born. I even had one talk to me while I was waiting for the elevator to go feed DS. I am no longer BF though but thats another issue and has nothing to do with Winthrop or the LC.

I filled out the survey they sent me and put some nurses on blast. I got a typed form letter from Winthrop telling me they were going to address the issues Chat Icon

Re: Recent Winthrop BF mommies...

I just Ned to share my bf'ing story. Dd was sent tot the nicu 12 hrs after birth for low blood sugar. The next day I started to try to bf, she had some latching issues, but the 2 lc's helped me for a sy or so. A day or so later, I asked Betty to help me bf. So again, latching issues, and dd wasn't getting enough food. Betty fed her a bottle! A formula bottle! I was shocked, in the best possible way. She said this baby was in the nicu for low blood sugar, and she needs to eat. Yes, bf is best, but sh fed her a half ounce while I pumped the rest. I fed her the bm bottle and she was fine. But shes not some crazy all bf, only bf. The health of the babies is what matters to her. I can't say enough nice things about her. And after I has dd # 1, shes the one who told us about the parking pass for nicu parents.
