Recommend your laptop (NOT A MAC)
I am not interested in buying a MAC. I am a PC gal so that's what I'm sticking with. I've always purchased cheap laptops and they become notoriously slow after awhile. I know it's because they are cheap. I need a good one for internet and MS office stuff. I don't need anything fancy, just something that won't drag it's @ss after a year!

Re: Recommend your laptop (NOT A MAC)
I second the Dell Inspiron cheapies.
I have a 500 dollar Dell Inspiron, going on it's 4th year. I needed a new hard drive about 6 months ago, but my laptop is on constantly. The only time it is NOT on is when we go on vacation.
If you have a decent processor and RAM, one thing to consider is maybe it's not the hardware. Maybe you have lots of software, viruses, malware slowing things down. If you get a decent machine, it should last you for more than a year. Maybe you should have someone look at it if you don't feel comfortable doing a cleanup for yourself - you probably would be able to have it cleaned up for a lot less money than buying a new one.

I bought the computer in August 2007. I have Norton and Anti Malware on it. I honestly don't have a lot of software on it - itunes, adobe reader, MS Office - basic stuff - which I don't have running in the background. I also just upgraded to Windows 7 a few months ago. It just makes me crazy that it's slowed down and I've added nothing new!

Re: Recommend your laptop (NOT A MAC)
a 500 dollar machine no more then 600 should bring you a long way (past a year)
keep in the mind, the user experience is flawed by what you collect on a pc so while the technology is still current, if you have a bunch of trash on the pc, you will think the computer sucks.
as of late, i've been a fan of HP. All in all, any company is relatively the same.
Look for duo core 2 processors. still away form centrino machines. Please post or FM what you are thinking about and i will give a quick review of it.
look at techbargains.com for deals on laptops

Just because you have Norton and Anti Malware software on it, doesnt mean you haven't picked up 'things' along the way. Just a few months ago I was running Symantec, Microsoft Security Essentials, and 3 different Malware programs. I work in IT and I still got a nasty virus (from a tech review site, no less.) The viruses/malware are smart enough to shut all of those tools off on you.
And I'm not sure what you mean by upgrading to Windows 7. That might be part of your problem. I never recommend 'upgrading' on top of an existing operating system. All you would be doing is making your problem worse as you're building on top of your hornet's nest. If you checked that you computer meets minimum requirements (hopefully much more than minimum requirements) and then completely formatted and installed the fresh Windows 7, then that would be OK. I've seen many in-place upgrades go bad and make situations much much worse.
Either way you go - good luck!

Re: Recommend your laptop (NOT A MAC)
This is our 2nd HP Laptop and within the 1 year warranty, our screen died, and our battery died. Everything was covered but make sure you buy the extra warranty for whatever you get- we did with our last one but because circuit city went out of business we were out of luck

Sony Vaio - This thing is indestructible. DD has knocked it off the table a few times and things have been spilled in it. I had one issue that required service and they sent a tech to my house within two days to fix it for free under warranty.

When I bought it came with Vista which sucked donkey b@lls It was slow then. It was fast for about a year then just started slowing down. By upgrading I meant I installed Windows 7 as my new operating system. The installation was fine and I've had no issues with it. Windows 7 helped a little but not much in terms of the slowness. I just hate that it takes a few minutes to boot up and when I have different programs open like MS Word and IE, it takes awhile to flip between then where as on my desktop I have no issue.

I plan to take it with me when I travel, but it's for my personal use. So technically it's a home computer.

Re: Recommend your laptop (NOT A MAC)
Dh bought me an ASUS laptop for Valentine's Day. His friend who is a computer guy highly recommended the brand and told him that they are the international version of Dell. It is super fast, sleek and awesome! Their price range is very broad- and I have an inexpensive one. You can get one at Best Buy or online. ASUS Laptop
