Has anyone taken any recreational cooking/baking classes?

Viking Cooking School in Garden City has cooking and baking classes. I've taken a few and have always had a great experience!

A friend of mine just started a cake decorating class at Michaels & she loves it. Not sure if every Michael's location offers it though - she is in NJ.

There are usually pretty inexpensive classes through adult ed at some high schools. I've done an italian cooking class like that a few times. I think it was like $50 +30 food fee, so $80 for 6 classes and we ate a full meal at the end of each class & took leftovers
