Reflux mommies (esp Silent) please come in...UPDATE
...DS is 9 weeks old, I had him in for his 2 month check up today and we were discussing his fussiness. I was thinking it all had to do with my oversupply/forceful let down with BFing, but the ped thinks it may be reflux. DS eats often, every 2 hours if not sooner and if very often very fussy AFTER eating. He sometimes is also fussy while eating, gags/chokes with BFing, has hiccups and is generally uncomfortable. He seems better if I give him a bottle of pumped milk. He doesn't spit up at all, although he used to bring up entire feeds when he was a newborn, which stopped after I started only feeding one side per feeding. She said she will give it 2 weeks---if he is not showing any improvement she will put him on meds. What symptoms did your DC have? Does this sound like reflux? He is growing fine, in fact he is gaining weight fast bc he eats so much (he has gone from the 5th to the 50th percentile in 2 months!!) I am really at my wits end, this is my second fussy baby and I feel so bad for my older son too.
UPDATE: We started Zantac today, I hope it helps!!

Re: Reflux mommies (esp Silent) please come in...
do you smell anything? does he smell bad, like his breath? Or do you hear wet burps?
my son had the following symptoms:
-he arches his back and throws his head back -he cries in the middle of a feeding -He used to eat 3-4 ounces at a time and now it's more like 1, maybe 2 ounces. -is irritated shortly after feedings (he wakes an hour and a half after a feeding and screams bloody murder. he used to sleep 3-4 hours at a time) -his farts smell (yes that really is a sign) -he cries immediately when he's laid flat -he stiffens his legs -we can no longer put him in his crib at night and he now sleeps in his rocker.

He definitely has wet burps, after which he cries more. He used to go longer btwn feedings, like 3 hours, now goes no longer then 2. I don't know how much he takes since I BF. He only naps in his bouncer. He will sleep in the crib, but it is on a slight incline (towels under mattress)

DS was also gaining weight but had bad reflux. He would also throw his head back and arch his back. Had vomit smelling breath. Hiccup a lot. Had wet sounding burps and you could hear a wetness in his throat when he cried. Screamed when we laid him flat. Split up a lot. He coughed and gagged during feedings, sometimes he refused to eat.
He was on Zantac for 2 weeks which didnt helo and now is on prilosec which has been working great so far.
Its been hard but he is finally less fussy.

well it sounds like he might have it. The fact that he's crying more after his wet burps tells me he does. I guess worst case is you can try some meds and see if it makes a difference. If it does, then there's your answer.
All i know is that once jacen was on zantac for 24 hours, he was back to being the happy baby he was in the beginning.

My ped wanted to give it 2 more weeks (she feels that by 11 weeks fussiness not related to reflux should be getting better)---I am wondering if I should call tomorrow and ask just to try the meds now!

Re: Reflux mommies (esp Silent) please come in...
DD had the same issues. At 3 weeks she was eating 32 oz of formula a day. She always had the hiccups, and would cry while eating but want to eat. The dr first had us hold her upright to eat and elevate her mattress, it did nothing. They then put her on mylanta, did nothing then axid, which helped a little but she still cry then we were feeding her. They tested her poop and it came up positive for blood. After 2.5 months of her sufffering we found out she had a milk allergy. Try cutting dairy out of your diet, see if it makes a difference. We still give DD axid for her acid reflux, but once she went on to hyperallergenic formula she was a different baby.

well i'm not a ped, but i don't see how 11 weeks means anything. Generally i thought that fussy babies get better by 6 months, not 11 weeks. I've just never heard that timeline before.
The choice is yours really. It's a matter with how much more you can stand. I mean with the meds, you'll notice a difference within a day to 3 days if it is the right medication. Keep in mind most start with zantac and not all babies respond to zantac.
Honestly, when jacens reflux kicked in at 7-8 weeks... it was like i had a colicky baby all of a sudden. It was horrible. He was up every 2 hours at night because he was so uncomfortable. I personally couldn't have waited 2 more weeks to see what happens. But that's just me.

Re: Reflux mommies (esp Silent) please come in...
The symptoms you describe definitely sound like reflux. DS had silent reflux.....it took a long time to finally get him the treatment he needed to be a happy baby. Sometimes as parents you have to go with your gut and advocate for your DC. I took DS to a specialist even though the ped. didn't think he had reflux.....turned out he had a severe case (they scoped him) with damage to the esophagus. Silent Reflux is very tricky and quite dangerous as it can cause extensive damage before the diagnosis is made. DS was diagnosed and prescribed Zantac and Elecare.
My advice is to seek help from a specialist. We initially sought help from a GI who helped my DS with his symptoms but it was the pediatric chiropractor who cured him. After a month of adjustments, no more meds or prescription formula. Plenty of people thought we were nuts but ...Chiro worked for our DS!
Hang in there....I know this is not an easy road but it will get better.
FM me if you would like referrals or any other help.
