Refusing meds

Every winter we go through the same drama. Does anyone have any tips/advice? DD (5) will not take any type of meds including tylenol and advil. She had fever Sunday night and I had to give her advil. She screams and cries that shes not taking it to the point that dh had to hold her arms while I squirted the baby dropper in with the advil to which she pukes it up...(Sounds fun). So basically she is barely getting it. This is not optional when she has fever. What do I do? I left out, Ive tried to put it in water or food, she tastes it or will refuse the food.

Chat Icon its so frustrating
Have you tried the rapid tabs, melt aways or thin strips? Im not sure what age they start (DS is 7) but they have turned giving meds around for us.

My daughter is the same way & the meltaways work for her.

I would try the meltaways but in the meantime try practicing swallowing an M&M. Once they can swallow pills, it's a whole new world.

Re: Refusing meds

My daughter has to take a ton of meds. due to her illness which started when she was 3. Her doc. at the time suggested starting a "grab bag" for her and every time she takes her medicine successfully without spiting or spilling any of it she can pick something out of the grab bag. it worked and still works 3 years later.
It's a pain though always trying to find things that are cheap but cool for the bag but it works and I never have to fight with her about her meds..and she takes some pretty awful tasting meds.

hope this helps.

Re: Refusing meds

Definately try meltaways or chewables. They are so much easier! And sometimes you can bribe them or trick them with sweetarts if they refuse the chewables! Chat Icon But don't tell anyone I told you that Chat Icon Chat Icon
