Regular poster in hiding: Need help - deciding between staying at current job and accepting new offer...
Here is the situation. It's a complicated one, made more so by many life factors that I don't want to disclose for the sake of anonymity. But the bottom line is I have the opportunity to take on a new job and I would love some objective opinions on which direction others would pursue.
Direction 1: Current job. Really enjoy the job environment and coworkers, and like the actual job title/role but it isn't exactly in line with my degree and education - related, but not on the nose. The salary is not amazing but decent I suppose, I do get a very small raise each year but not really anything that makes a difference. The commute is about 1 hour 15 minutes (drive to LIRR, take LIRR, take subway; reverse to get home). Leave house at about 6:30am to get home close to 5pm. Decent benefits (such as sick days/vacation/maternity, health insurance is decent but I do pay into it each month).
Direction 2: New job opportunity. 15 minute drive from home, shorter hours (work 9-4, so realistically with driving it would be about 8:30-4:30), slightly better pay. Exactly in line with my education and degree. No benefits other than built in vacation (and quite a bit of it). It is more of a contractor position, however there is job security. I can go on DH's health insurance at no cost to us so that I don't mind, but I don't get maternity benefits or sick days - any days off aside from the built in vacation would be unpaid. I have a friend who works at this job and she love love loves it there, and the people I interviewed with were amazing.
Which path would you take? Thanks!
ETA: Updated with my 'complicating factors' at the bottom.

It sounds like #2, especially if you can go on your DH insurance and his job is stable.
Even w/o maternity, it also sounds like it may be flexible for a working parent.
Also a shorter commute is a major pro (especially as a parent) and having amazing co-workers is priceless.
Also could you always go back to your current employer if things don't end up working out?

#2... Maternity leave is nice but when you do have a LO more time day to day is going to be more important to you. I traded in a 8am to 7pm day for a 9am-5pm day and didn't look back... and even though I wasn't eligible for FMLA when I had DS my boss let me take the 12 weeks, 10 of which were paid, anyway. So you never know. They could end up working with you on it!

#2. Especially with the health care, you get time off, shorter commute is huge with more time & lesswear on you!
As far as unpaid for extra time off, many companies are that way, you learn to budget it, plan ahead. But you said they give a ton. Maybe can talk to HR is you have a concern (ie maternity/family illness?)
Any other negatives to 2, cause seems pretty straightforward, but you might have the fear of the change?

Job #2!
And, you could also look into purchasing separate short term disability insurance that would cover part of your salary when / if you have a baby.
I know someone that did this.
Good luck!

Yes, this is the key question (about other negatives). The job itself doesn't really have negatives, but my situation does. I didn't share originally because I wanted objective opinions.
The situation is that I am currently pregnant. Fairly far along, too. The new job knows this and is okay with it but taking the new job will mean being there for about a month before giving birth, and then taking a much shorter leave than I planned to at my current job. Even though my current job leave would be unpaid, they knew I expected to take a long leave and that was fine. So I will have to adjust and take a much shorter leave.
The other concern is I won't be able to give a full two weeks notice to my current job, likely. Because of the circumstances, I will probably be able to give about a week's notice. However, my current job changed my duties this year so that they are not relying on me as much so I'm not sure this will be a huge deal except that I feel very badly about this.
So those are my complicating factors with this. And yes, change is a bit scary because I do like my current job but as everyone mentioned, job #2 has so many pros that will benefit my family I just don't think I can pass it up.

Re: Regular poster in hiding: Need help - deciding between staying at current job and accepting new offer...
Why can't you give at least 2 weeks notice? I would think a new employer would be understanding of that.
Also how much time were you planning to take off with the new job vs. the old?
Is this your first child? What if they were to come earlier?
Also, if it's any help, I started my maternity leave 2 weeks before DS was born. He was born exactly on his due date, 2 weeks later, and within a month of being home with him, I was totally itching to get back to work, if anything for the "break" and to be around other adults.
I realize this is a different feeling for everyone though, but maybe it will make your thoughts about taking the new job, easier.

I'd say #2 but would be wary of any job that won't let you give 2 weeks notice to your current employer.
