Did they say when it was? The walk for Autism Speaks isn't until October.

I hope it was legit
Did you get their info by any chance?
In those situations, it's best to review and confim the legitimacy (or non legitimacy) and then donate. I usually take information and do some legwork first.. Especially when it's door to door.
Did you write out a check? If so, was it to the foundation or them?
Hoping it was legit. I hate to say that, but you just never know these days.

No, I didn't get their information. My husband was the one who answered the door and then brought in the paper with a sheet of handwritten names of my neighbors on my block and amounts they donated. The little girl who the mother said was autistic, did appear to be autistic. The thought did cross my mind that we could be getting scammed but, we did the right thing.. I looked up the walk after they left on-line. I too, saw that it isn't until October and said to my husband that it was strange that they didn't ask to write a check direct to the foundation.. Oh dear, I really hope they aren't scamming people... It's just too sad so many people are doing these types of things and getting children involved.
I edited my post because I realize that the way I worded a sentence did not look right.

I would put a stop on the check....investigate it further first.

I think I might agree. It could be legit but I think it's strange to walk door to door late on a Saturday evening. A lot of fundraising for events like the Autism walk are done online these days. I hope you weren't scammed!

The little girl did look like there was something wrong with her though.
As a parent of a child with autism, I would caution you to be careful about how you describe children with autism. I know you did not mean any disrespect by this, and I don't mean any disrespect to you, but there are a lot of parents of kids with autism out there who may object to this characterization.
Also, please know that not everyone views an autism diagnosis as a tragedy. It is a challenge, yes, and sometimes a big challenge. But my son is an absolute joy in my life and I would not want anyone to pity us because of his diagnosis.
All of that said, I am glad that you and your husband were eager to support autism research but please do be careful about who you write checks to, especially if they are strangers going door to door at off hours.

Re: Parents with two little girls walking house to house in the village of Lindenhurst
Couldn't it just be that these parents are poor and are so desperate and having a hard time with Dr.'s bills that they resorted to going door to door?
I don't think they'd make their child pretend to be autistic.
If I was scammed... I know that God is watching what we did and we did what we thought was right.

I am very sorry. I sincerely did not mean to offend you or anyone with a child with autism. I didn't word it right. I was trying to do a good thing by helping this family out. I know you said that you know I didn't mean any disrespect and you are correct! I did not! Again, I'm sorry to have worded it the way that I did.
Please forgive me. :(

I know you did not mean any disrespect... you seem like a genuinely caring, sensitive person, so I just wanted to bring this to your attention. I appreciate the apology and I was not offended by your post at all... just wanted to add a little perspective from an autism mom.

when you raise money for something like "autism speaks" the money goes to the foundation for research...not to personal doctors bills. And Autism isn't like cancer...it's not something you go to the hospital and rack up bills for. It's a neural social behavior disorder.
ETA: I do feel it was probably legit though, esp bc the parents were so apologetic. Alot of charities / fundraisers go to door. People used to do it all the time with the school fundraisers, but usually it's neighbors you know. If it ever happens again I'd ask them if they live in the neighborhood.

There is a walk for Autism this weekend....it was on Saturday and I know because a friend of mine went to it! There is more than one walk for Autism a year on the island!

I'd stop my check and maybe write a new one directly to an Autism research organization. I'm all about helping those in need...but not being scammed...and this seems a bit fishy.

The OP said it was at Jones Beach...this one is at Whitman HS.

Re: Parents with two little girls walking house to house in the village of Lindenhurst
Very strange and would stop the check immediately. If it is legit I still find it strange to solicit donations like this for this. I have a child with special needs and don't consider it to be a tragedy or devastating terminally ill kind of thing. It makes life a bit harder yes but there are services and programs out there. I get donating to research like autism speaks etc but to just walk up to doors and ask for money sounds like for them specifically is just I honestly probably most likely would have given something small in cash like $5 knowing that it probably wasn't legit only because they had kids with them so don't feel bad but because you gave a check I don't know can they try to scam you out of more or something? Not sure if they can try to forge something from it. Sorry just sounds odd to me.

Sure they would. Look at those panhandlers that stand in the parking lots of the stores with their children and pretend they are out of work, ready to lose their home etc. Those people ARE scammers using their children to prey on the public's kindness.
I hate to say it, but I think you were conned. The autism walk isn't until October, so there is no urgency in going to someone's house at 8pm at night to solicit donations.
Like another poster said. Autism Speaks doesn't give money back to the community or individuals for doctor bills, social programs, etc.

I would stop the check immediately. If they are scammers, now they have your checking account & routing numbers.

Re: Parents with two little girls walking house to house in the village of Lindenhurst
Sounds like a family that fell hard on rough times. Whether or not this walk is for real, coming to your house at 8pm filled with guilt regarding an event months away doesn't sound right. It seems like this family needs help but this is not the right way to go about it.

"No, I didn't get their information. My husband was the one who answered the door and then brought in the paper with a sheet of handwritten names of my neighbors on my block and amounts they donated."
This is a common practice with scammers as I have had people do this at my house. All they have to do is look up the names of the houses around you and then put them on a sheet with money amounts they supposedly donated to their "cause".

I added an update because I wanted to clarify that there was no check given. It was a small amount of cash. Like I said, if I did get scammed, it was a small amount and therefore, I'm not worried about it.
Sometimes I wonder why I post on this site. So many people on here do not read the entire post, respond to it stating false information and then it spirals out of control.
I used to post on here often and I've been on here less and less because of the constant drama.
I have been on this board for years, each year it gets worse. These type of posters are ruining this site.
Have a great Sunday all!

Re: Parents with two little girls walking house to house in the village of Lindenhurst
My rule is to never ever give anything to people that come door to door or begging for money in any way. I always think scammer, but more importantly i want to discourage soliciting. I wish everyone would stop giving to beggars , it would stop. There are other ways to get help. From what you saw, I'm not doubting their dd was autistic, but it's not right to drag her around ringing bells.
My dh is like yours, he feels bad not giving
I posted a few weeks ago about solicitors ringing my bell selling candy, it's still bugging me!

I think this is where we all thought you had written out a check. I think we were just concerned about you potentially giving information to scammers. I don't think malicious intent was implied by anyone's response.
Sorry you felt that way.

I get that you are defensive because you were possibly scammed. I would probably be too, and try to convince myself it was legit. But, no one was attacking you, or being rude at all. Nothing has spiraled out of control. People were offering up reasons why it's probably a scam. They were trying to HELP you by saying to stop payment on the check.
