Removing dairy from diet-Update

So since my earlier posts about my son, I have been reading every book about autism known to man. I think I am on my 5th book now. Of course I have to do this at night after my kids are asleep so my house is falling apart and I'm not sleeping, but I don't care. I need to find out what I can do to help my baby.

I bought a weighted blanket and pillow and that was a bust, but not giving up. Thought it might help with his extreme tantrumming to help calm him down but nope. Deep pressure and squeezes sometimes help. I ordered a corn brush to help rub on his skin when he starts rubbing his hands together and needs the sensory input.

Anyway, I keep reading so many people say how diet has affected their children. Now, my son as many others with delays is an extremely picky eater. I would love to try gluten free but I know that we all have to do it and so would my MIL who has him when he gets out of school and there wouldn't be a chance in hell she's gonna follow it.

My son loves his milk and what is so interesting is milk is often mentioned in cases of kids with autism (along with gluten). He is obsessed with it and is one of the few things that calm him down. People have reported seeing instant changes as soon as they took their kids off milk. I want to try it. If it even has a chance of working, I have to try, just so I know I did. My question is what do I substitute? I see there's almond milk, soy milk, and a bunch of others. Some are good for cereal, mixing with coffee, etc. Which one is good for plain ol drinking (just putting in his sippy cup)?

Sorry for long winded question. Another late night I was up reading again so my mind is all over.Chat Icon

My son LOVES coconut milk. I get the sweetened one from Trader Joes. I actually drink it and like it too

Removing dairy from diet

Dairy effects my daughter as well. I think its the lactose that was bothering her. We had her tested and she wasn't allergic but I swear when I switched over to lactaid she was better. I really don't do much about it now as she doesn't drink much milk but I do notice if she eats alot of ice cream or cheese, she is "off".

Any of what you mentioned is good but my only suggestion is that if he loves his milk, work whatever your going to which over too do it gradually. like do 3/4 milk 1/4 substitute, 1/2 milk, 1/2 substitute and so on so he can get use to the taste.

I will definitely try that. Thank you. So you give your daughter Lactaid? Just not sure which one to get. He really doesn't eat ice cream or cheese, but he eats those baby Gerber yogurts (not refrigerated) so I have to see if that had dairy in it (I'm assuming probably).

Yes I gave her the lactaid when she was younger. She was adopted and very malnourished and was drinking about 40 ounces of milk a day. I switched her to lactaid like I mentioned above and she was totally fine with it. Now though at 9 she drinks no milk and is only a water drinker. She finds the milk to "thick" and won't drink it anymore.

Re: Removing dairy from diet-Update

Wanted to give an update:

So it's been almost 2 weeks since we took my son off dairy. I wasn't sure if I was seeing a difference. We have noticed some improvements in speech but he is in school all day and they have been pushing him a lot.

Tonight I think there is a difference since removing the dairy. The first thing I will say is my son had bad eczema patches. We even had him on a prescription cream I had to put on every night. His eczema is completely gone! I have not used the prescription in a week.

Tonight for the first time he said his brother's name. It was just me screaming for my son but he repeated me. He is a little over 3 and has never said his brother's name. He also was saying a few little phrases here and there-out of context, like rain, rain go away (while he was sitting there, it's not raining) but I'm assuming they sang it in school or something. Trying not to get my hopes up but for tonight I am happy.Chat Icon

That is GREAT!!!!!
You probably wont see him as sick in the winter time. I dont consume dairy, and cant tell you the last time I was sick or my son (knock on wood)

Great update! I was thinking of trying to remove dairy but the only thing my DS eats in the morning is his kefir (a yogurt drink with probiotics) so it would be really rough for us!
