Renovation Costs
I did a search and only saw one post from 4 years ago, so I figured updated estimates would be helpful.
We're deciding whether to buy a home move-in ready and use most of our savings as a downpayment, or to buy something that needs a total overhaul and only put down a small amount and save the rest for renovations.
Anyone do renovations recently? About how much did it cost if you don't mind sharing?
I'm thinking: -New kitchen -New bathrooms -New sheetrock (3 bedrooms, livingroom, den, dining room) -Siding -Windows -Maybe add sliding doors in the kitchen to get to the backyard.
This would be for either a ranch/cape/small split
And anything else that I may have forgotten.
How would you get estimates for these things before buying a certain home?
TIA!

Re: Renovation Costs
I did some of these renovations in my house.
Kitchen - 40k Windows - 9k Sliders - 2/3k Siding - 22k (shake siding plus shutters and window trim)
I had no idea how much they would cost before I bought a house. I just knew that everything is expensive!

Re: Renovation Costs
We redid two bathrooms (not high end, and did the demo ourselves) and spent $14K.
ETA: We did not move the location of the toilet/sink, etc.--this would have cost a great deal more to move plumbing. We did get new sheetrock.

Re: Renovation Costs
Today's R.E. market you will do better with a house already fixed up. Problem is your taste in baths and kitchens my not be the same.
Starter Kitchens around 10,000 less if you have good handy friends, more if you have expensive taste.
Bathrooms standard replacement 6,000 to 8,000. High end can cost you over 20,000.
Labor and material have skyrocketed in the last couple of years. House prices have come down over 20%
Some great deals on updated homes just have to be patient.
If you want, speak with Beth, she can set you up on listingbook to look around.
Good Luck, Arthur

Re: Renovation Costs
-New kitchen ( kitchen i would estimate with appliances 25K for mid range)
-New bathrooms (7-150) we had estimate for as little as 7 to 15)
-New sheetrock We did two bedrooms, living room and dining room and laundry for about 5K
-Siding our house was average 10K
-Windows replacement figure around $150-$200 each i have seen advertised unless its a special size/uv coat.
-Maybe add sliding doors in the kitchen to get to the backyard. Not sure
These are prices we realistically priced out when purchasing our fixer upper. But also make buffers for things like kitchens, siding and bathrooms if the house is older. Once you open a wall things will need to be fixed on top of that.

Re: Renovation Costs
we did all the renovations in our house for 25K.
this is what we did: New kitchen - appliances, cabinets, drywall, plumbing, electrical, flooring, granite Engineered wood floor - first floor and second floor minus the bathroom and kitchen new drywall - entire first floor, Paint - entire house new vanity in bathroom moved circuit breaker from kitchen to garage replaced electrical in 3 rooms
the bathroom is the only room we did not do much
we did all the work ourselves except moving the breaker to the garage.
SO you can see what some people spend on their kitchen I was able to do my entire house. We didn't scrimp on finishes either....

Re: Renovation Costs
I think the cost of most interior renovations is dependent on how much work you are willing to do yourself.
We didn't do the windows/doors/laminate flooring or sheetrock ourselves:
Windows including 1 slider: $3700 Laminate - entire house $7000 sheetrock - 2 bed/1bath/kitchen/dr/staircase/foyer - $3500
We did all demo/paint/molding/cabinet install ourselves.

That's awesome! My step-dad is a plumber, so he said not to really worry about the bathrooms.
I think we can do it on our budget, which is about $50k.
Thanks again for all the responses!
