Renting a car in Aruba? Should I or Shouldn't I?
We're headed to Aruba next weekend and are thinking about renting a car at least for a few days. We're bringin our 2 DS and will need to make a big trip to the local grocery store. To rent a van for a week will be $700-800 (much more than I'm willing to spend). Do you think I should rent one for a day or two? or is everything close enough that walking will do?

We did last trip and plan on doing it again this trip (but, it was just two of us so we were able to get a compact for a reasonable price through Alamo).
We only used it once other than to and from the airport though (we drove around the island).
We are going back this year and probably will rent one again though.

We are going in Oct and don't plan on renting a car. We figure there is always a bus, cab and walking to get around.
Our Hotel is close to everything and I believe there is a bus that takes you into town.

Only for a day or two- plan to do your shopping, go to baby beach or drive around the tourist sights just for those days
Otherwise, you can walk most places for dinner or take the bus (VERY safe and reliable) into town

Re: Renting a car in Aruba? Should I or Shouldn't I?
we stayed in the high-rise section and didn't rent a car. we walked where we needed to go, or just took a cab. a car for the whole week would have been a waste of money. we only rented a car for 1 day to drive around off-road on the north side of the island.

We rented a jeep for the day to go to the Natural Pool and Baby Beach and that was all we really needed it for.

I wouldn't rent a car there at all...especially since you're staying close to the beach. There's not much to do there, so whatever trips you do take there won't pay off in renting the car. You'd spend 1/4 on taking cabs...the most.

Yes, you must! You are in the high rise section, right? At least for a few days. Use it to get your groceries, see Baby Beach for the kiddies, and do anything else you may need to travel for. Cabs are VERY $$$$, DH and I spent over $500 on transportation just for the 2 of us everyday.

Re: Renting a car in Aruba? Should I or Shouldn't I?
SO after having a sit-down with DH, his sister and her husband (whose time share we're using and who we are going with). We decided to rent a minivan and split it ($2oo each couple for the week). Even though I really only wanted to rent it for a few days, everyone overruled me. I think in the end with going grocery shopping and having both my DS's with me it probably would be cheaper to rent the van in the end versus paying for cab rides. Thanks for all the input. I'll let you know if my $200 was worth it .

Re: Renting a car in Aruba? Should I or Shouldn't I?
We were just there in June and if we go back, we plan on renting a car for just a day or two to do some more exploring. From what I understand, if you do it by the day it's pretty cheap (like $35-40 per day). At least that's what the concierge told me!

we did and it was so cheap! $30 a day I think. we only rented it for a few days, but it was great! we drove all over the island (can't get lost, it's so small) and also used the car to go out to dinner and grocery shopping (for breakfast and snacks)
