renting a car with a carseat
so DH and i would like to take our DS to florida in nov to visit his great grandparents. We would def have to rent a car as my grandfather is 89 and still drives, so of course we wouldn't let him drive us around. I was just wondering if anyone rented a car and what their experience was using the rental cars car seat. Are they dirty, safe, etc. also what did you use to cover it when DC sat in it? Thanks!

Re: renting a car with a carseat
Since we flew to FL, we bought DC seats on the plane (much, much safer than on the lap). We just used our own carseats in the rental. I know that our seats were never in a prior accident, never exposed to chemicals that could weaken them, have never had a recall on them, etc.

Re: renting a car with a carseat
If i were going to be driving around alot, I would feel better bringing my own. But we went to Puerto Rico when DD was 5 months old so she didnt have a seat on the plane. We only used the car to drive from the airport and back and rented a car seat. Honestly it was pretty gross and I didn't think it was too safe so I would have NOT felt comfy driving around alot in it. You can call the rental car company and ask what kind of seat it is and what year its from.

We rented one with the car when we went to San Diego a couple of months ago. The seat was clean and in good condition.

Re: renting a car with a carseat
I think it is a bad idea. My SIL rented a car with one and it was WAY too big for my neice, who was only 1 at the time. She had to drive to Wal Mart and buy a new one.
Your DS will only be like, what, 5-6 months old? Does he fit in the infant carrier still? We flew with DS in July and brought our infant seat and it really wasn't a big deal. We gate checked it and it was nice to have our stroller and car seat.

Re: renting a car with a carseat
We rented two for my boys through Hertz (cost $50 each) when we went to Florida. However, while safe and clean we had to install them which took forever because they were not the ones we had and there was no insturction booklet. The lady at the counter said they don't install them for insurance reasons.
It would be so much easier to just bring yours on the plane and use it in the rental car. I know that is what i am going to do in the future.

Re: renting a car with a carseat
I brought my own carseat with me to FL. You can bring it on the plane if there are extra seats or if you buy an extra one or check it at the gate.
