replacing windows - new question at bottom
1. We desperately need to replace the windows in our living room and kitchen. We planned on doing it before the winter, but we procrastinated. At this point should we wait til spring? or is it ok do change them during the winter months?
2. We also want to paint - should we paint before or after doing the windows?

replacing windows (2 questions)
1. We're having ours replaced this week on the entire back of the house. I think it's fine. They never expressed concern to us about doing it in colder temps. It will just be really cold in the house while they're working, so I wouldn't do it when young children are home.
2. Paint after. They have to remove moldings and what not.

Personally, I would wait until spring- the house is going to be cold once they take out the old windows. You should wait until after you have the windows done to paint.

I would do it whenever. Unless you are switching sizes its not that big of a job and they aren't out that long.
Pain after.

Re: replacing windows (2 questions)
I would do them now. Yes, it will be very cold the day they replace them, but you'll be warmer every day for the rest of the winter, since the new windows will be better insulated, and keep the heat in better.

Its fine to do it now, its actually better when its cold because the window is fit to the frame now, and when it gets warmer it will expand which will make a tighter fit. I've heard you should not do windows in warm weather, because when it gets cold it will contract and then the seal isnt as good. We had 4 windows replaced last December, it was chilly for a little bit in the house, but the windows werent out for all that long so it was fine. Definitely wait until after to paint, you may need to touch up the moldings/wall etc.

Re: replacing windows (2 questions)
Thanks everyone. I feel like we are throwing money out the window because the drafts are so bad, you can actually see the curtains moving when the wind blows. Yesterday was just brutal in the living room, I needed the space heater.
Now one more question: Where did you get your windows from and who installed them? And were you happy with them?
Thanks.

We used Anderson. They are definitely pricey but worth it to us to have great windows that will last a long time. We had a great experience with the salesman, and installation guys were wonderful. And they offered financing so we were able to pay it off over 18 months.

This is a little off topic, but I am curious, have you tried the window film that you can apply during the winter to help reduce the draft? We have a terrible draft in our den because of the window and were thinking about trying this.

The film definitely helps drafts.

We tried everything. . . it's the windows itself, they are all warped and do not close completely (you can't even lock them) so the draft come in from where they would lock and the top of the window.
