Resuming “normal” life
Restaurants and stores are packed again, lots of vacations and parties etc.
Wondering as people return to normalcy - what has given you the comfort to do so?
Is it because you have gotten the vaccine? If not, what is it?

Re: Resuming “normal” life
Definitely not 100% normalcy for me but I feel better 1. Having had Covid already and 2. Receiving the vaccine DH and I have eaten at a restaurant (early in the day so not many people around at all) we felt like real people again We also went to our neighbors house for cake and coffee (bday cake) it was just the 4 of us. 3 of us vaccinated, 1 had Covid and waiting the 90 days.
I went to NJ to see my family. Mom and siblings etc. everyone vaccinated. Haven’t seen them since this whole thing started. My mom is going to be 82 w health conditions so we were very very careful with her.
I know I’m not 100% protected from having Covid or the vaccine but I feel better having some protection so I can live life a little more now. I won’t spend time maskless with people who are Maskholes or deny Covid even exists. I will spend time with those to practice social distancing when necessary and work hard to keep themselves and others safe.
ETA: I will also go Masked to larger gatherings where I wouldn’t have before having Covid and getting vaccinated. Mask & antibodies makes me feel more secure in going more places with more people

Resuming “normal” life
My DH and I are vaccinated as are all adults in our families, except for my one SIL. Since being vaccinated, we have now seen both of our families (we had not seen them since the summer). We do not live local to them so we have to drive and stay with them, which we were not comfortable doing over the winter.
We have not gone on vacation, but did eat in a restaurant for my niece's communion party. It was a small, private gathering where everyone except my SIL and the children were vaccinated. My family wore masks, while not eating or drinking. I am still concerned about my DS missing school if he gets exposed.

Resuming “normal” life
We just got tired of the dangling carrot. It was 2 weeks then 2 months then another 2 months. We did what we were supposed to. Now we are living our lives. Those at risk are vaccinated. We have treatment options. The way my kids changed was very concerning. It was time.

Same. I don't feel nervous at all. I still wear my mask where required and keep my distance in stores as much as I can. I'm huge on hand washing (but always have been) There is a limit of how long this can go on for. The odds of survival are in my favor even if I did catch it. My mental health couldn't take anymore and to be honest THAT was the bigger risk to me. ETA- I've been eating indoors since last June when Indoor was allowed. And seeing family since last May as well. I've also been on local vacations- Jersey Shore, etc all year. I haven't flown but not out of fear- out of the inconvenience of it with quarantines etc

Re: Resuming “normal” life
As friends and family get vaccinated we'll start resuming social interactions. My parents are fully vaccinated so we finally got to see them, they came up and stayed with us for almost 2 weeks. It was great to finally see them!
We've been out in the world since last May shopping, eating out, etc while following guidelines. It's nice seeing more people out now, things feel more normal lately. Having had COVID I feel more comfortable being out living life. DH and I plan on getting the vaccine soon and then I feel like things can be even more normal.
Glad the worst is behind us.

Re: Resuming “normal” life
The only thing I have done is wear a mask when mandated.
Have seen friends since last May. Hugged and kissed them every time. Out at restaurants since they opened. No fear of going places and doing things. Have a vacation planned but hanging on for word on that. Have been away for the weekend.
Don’t plan to get vaccinated anytime soon and don’t care if you are or not as it didn’t bother me to see you when you weren’t.
Kids have seen friends, one every single day since this started. 2 of those friends had it but not very bad and recovered fine. My kid was with one of them on vacation, sleeping and eating and traveling, etc next to them for a week. Friend tested positive, my kid negative, 2 tests. Thinking friend got it before going away but they were still hanging out before that.
Who knows how this all works honestly because there seems to be no rhyme or reason as people have worked at jobs and seen friends and never got it and then there are some who wear masks and don’t see people and go many places that do.

Re: Resuming “normal” life
We are holding my kids b’nai mitzvah (bar and bat) in May for about 50 people. It will be indoors. All of the adult guests, family, and staff are fully vaccinated. Only the kids are not. The room holds 1000 people so I feel comfortable hosting it. We have now seen our family a couple of times as we are all fully vaccinated.

Resuming “normal” life
I have been comfortable meeting in small groups and doing things since last May - we've gone on vacations, to dinner, to friends houses and such. But, I feel that I am at the same level of comfort still that I felt last May.

I feel pretty much the same, especially regarding mental health. I'm not breaking the rules; I'm doing what's allowed.
The only real difference is that I am at a higher risk for severe illness, though I reviewed the statistics for my specific condition, and my risk factor is still quite low for my age group. I'm also fully vaccinated, and I'm comfortable with how incredibly low of a risk severe illness now is. COVID is not going away, so we are going to have to take calculated risks.
I have an immediate family member who has been critically ill and hospitalized since January with COVID, so it isn't as though I'm unaware of how serious it can be. I am acutely aware.
I respect how other people choose to navigate these steps to normalcy, and I hope others respect my approach as well.

Re: Resuming “normal” life
Definitely nowhere near normal. I'm half vaxed- I get my second dose Monday and DH's second dose is Friday.
We still mask up for everything, don't really go out. I ate in an indoor restaurant once and we had a separate room from other diners.
ETA: We had planned to go to Disney in October, but we're postponing til next March.
ETAA: We're having a birthday party for our DD next week, first time we've invited any friends over, but it will be in our backyard.

Re: Resuming “normal” life
I've been living life since we have been allowed. But, with all the same sanitary practices I have been taking for decades. Eating out, movies, mini golf, bowling, etc. We have traveled to a lot of places in the Northeast. My son flew on a plane to visit his Grandma last Summer. We just make sure to wash hands, use alcohol wipes, wipe things down.
With that said, some things I do not do. Like gather indoors with a group of people, I've missed a couple of huge birthday parties at Hibachi, and we don't have people in the house often. But, that's more because I don't want to be in close contact with people and have to potentially quarantine from my life for 10 days if those people end up sick and we were around each other for an extended period of time and they give my name to the health department (or whatever they do.
I'm not vaccinated, have an appt at the end of the month, but unsure if I will keep it. My son is half vaccinated. He has special needs, attends a day program, is 22 years old and I know that at some point they will be requiring it for his programs, like they require regular vaccines.

Re: Resuming “normal” life
I wouldn't say we resumed "normal" pre-covid life. We have resumed the things we need in our life to preserve our mental health and we've eliminated the pre-covid things that did not bring us joy or add to our lives.
What initially made us comfortable was the insanely low infection rate over the summer. And then even when the infection rate was shooting up over the winter, the mortality rate never came close to what it was in March 2020. So we knew that covid treatments were advancing to the point that we would be ok if anything happened. And despite things continuing to reopen, the numbers never got out of control.
At this point, everyone around me is eligible for the vaccine and open appointments are prevalent. If you choose not to get it that's on you. It's no longer my responsibility to keep my family isolated for anyone else's benefit.

Re: Resuming “normal” life
Following the guidelines & wearing a mask when I need to even though I am vaccinated to protect others. Enjoying life, but mindful of others and of the fact that kids can't be vaccinated yet.
Planning a fun summer for the family that involves camp and travel, but probably not on a plane yet. Mostly because planes and airports look miserable now.
Hoping that the numbers go down commensurate with vaccination and that no vaccine-resistant variants pop up so we can put this behind us.

Resuming “normal” life
I'm still mostly in quarantine because I'm immunocompromised from my recent cancer/chemo treatments and I can't get the first shot until mid-June (one of the chemo meds reacts with the vaccine and I have to wait until it's mostly out of my system).
Cases are also on the rise where I am (NC) so I'm trying to be careful until I can be fully vaccinated.
I have started meeting friends outside for walks or dinner outside with me sitting far away, but that's about all I feel comfortable with right now.

You know you and I are in the same page. It boggles my mind how people all of a sudden since they got the vaccine feel like we have for a year now. You didn’t get sick so far so how do you even know you will and needed a vaccine? I know my placebo word didn’t go over well as I am sure it is was the incorrect word I was trying to use and convey. More of the feeling of now I am ok since I got this vaccine. It’s not like insulin or medication where you know it will work as it has been around for so long and they can adjust doses. You basically are trying this out and it gives you a sense of relief which honestly makes no sense to me at all. Maybe again since I never felt scared. Yes in the beginning when they basically told us it was a death sentence for everyone.

Re: Resuming “normal” life
sadly, the pandemic showed me that my normal life is a pandemic life. it's funny but sad.
the only things i've reintroduced into my life is an occasional meal out and a few small family functions.
on May 1, i'll be attending a backyard event. in late June, i'll be attending another backyard event. in September, i'll be attending a larger indoor event.
about 80% of the adults in my family are, at least, partially vaccinated. by the time of these events, the numbers will obviously increase.
honestly, i'm very much enjoying interacting with the public less. i used to make fun of instacart. now, i'm a happy frequent user. i am old, grouchy, and am blessed to make enough money to happily pay the fee and tip to have someone else deal with the local supermarket. i will continue to enjoy the farmers' market for produce... but grabbing the boxed/canned items can be delegated to someone else.

I am with you!!! The good that came out of the pandemic for me is that I don’t have to go to wedding and showers etc. they are torture for me and I will use the Covid excuse as long as possible. We have eaten out but not as much as we used to as I’m cooking more which is better for our health. The only thing I’m not rushing back to do is fly. I have been on vacation (last summer) and traveled for sports tournaments

Re: Resuming “normal” life
To me, the vaccine isn't magic, but an extra layer of protection, So, now that I have it, I can take off one of the other layers.
The first layer I will be removing is small indoor gatherings. I am going to see my parents tomorrow ( 2 households, 5 people) and friends on Sunday, ( 3 households, 6 people, all vaccinated.)
I'm kind of a homebody anyway. The only thing I've really sacrificed is seeing my family. There are some other things that I need to do, that I have been avoiding, but they arent' fun things ( going to the dentist, having people come in to fix things, etc.)
As a general crowd avoided, I do fear that everything is going to be super crowded all at once now that people are vaccinated.

No. There is no normal life here now, lol. I did go out after curfew (10PM) yesterday, though. I had to mail something and forgot, so I just drove to the place to drop it off. Not sure if that falls under "unavoidable reasons."
Highlight of my week.
Oh last week, I got to go to their version of Best Buy here. But that was only because I had had a negative test within 24 hours, so I was allowed in.

You need a negative test to shop in a store? Over a year later? Holy God, what is going on there?
