I think most people who are eligible to retire early are civil service workers who probably have lifetime benefits.
DH does not have lifetime benefits, but health insurance is covered from the time he retires up until he is eligible for medicare.

My medical ends once I retire, but I do have spousal coverage thru DH's union. If he dies, I lose that coverage unless it is brought back into the contract.

I have union coverage but have to pay 50% for it after retirement.
