Spin off: At what age would you bring a baby on a ferry?

DD is almost 7 weeks and my parents are hoping we'll bring her to Fire Island in 2 weeks. The have a pretty big (and slow) boat but they know I don't want to take her on it while it's moving. They asked if we'll bring her over on the ferry to hang on the boat for a day. I told them I'd wait till the time comes to see if I'm comfortable. Thoughts?

I don't understand why you wouldn't bring her on a boat? If you're comfortable with her being outside then I don't think a boat is an issue, it's not like you're dangling her over the edge and it's actually probably safer than her being in a car.

Yes a ferry is different than someone's boat. It has an inside if it's cold, windy, too sunny. Go for it.

I agree. They move so slowly and are very safe. We took the ferry to CT when DD was 10 weeks old and I would have brought her much younger. It didn't even occur to me to be concerned.

Agree with PP, ferries are different from personal boats. Totally go for it!

I took my DS on a ferry at 3 months...he LOVED it, the sound, the breeze...loved!

I was thinking it would be fine until I read the other post and so all of the no's. Chat Icon Hopefully we'll do it.

I'm just not sure there's much of a difference as long as you're not talking about a speedboat. Would you take a baby on a bigger, slow boat? They do have an infant life jacket since they need it by law just to have her on the boat at the marina.

I have been taking DD on the Fire Island Ferry since she was a baby. My brother owns a beach house over at Davis park so we go all the time in the summer. I would sit down stairs with her in her stroller when she was an infant its such a short ride maybe 25 mins if that to get acrossed from Patchogue to Davis park. I say go for it!! Enjoy it!!

Now at almost 3 she can't wait to go on the ferry this summer to sit upstairs!!
