Retirement Age
There's been so much talk in the news about SS, Medicare, etc. that made me think about when DH and I will retire. Just curious about everyone's plans for the future.
I know this can sensitive so I made a poll

Re: Retirement Age
Realistically, I chose 60-65, but I'm going to do whatever I can to retire between 55 and 60....

Re: Retirement Age
I qualify for my pension at 58. My kids will be seniors in college... they get exactly 4 years to graduate and not a day more
Stand clear of the doors on that day
I have every intention of starting another career (part-time) a few years before that and I plan on working in my second career for about a decade.
Given the economic state we are in, (on paper it really did equal the Great Depression), I think it would be unrealistic of me, even with a pension and large 403B contributions over my career, to expect early retirement. Health care costs alone will be a significant expense.

Re: Retirement Age
I believe I can get my pension at 58.
However, I have no plans of retiring. If I am healthy and my children do not need me, I can see myself working until 70. Retiring makes you old ;)
At that point, I will have enough leave to take half the year off if I wanted to. I could go on monthlong vacations, stay home for weeks at a time -- but still return to work when I wanted to.
My dad will turn 70 this year and still works full time at the airport and loves it. I bought his house so he could retire and he shows no interest in doing so. AND everyone who meets him can't believe he is 70!

Re: Retirement Age
I can collect my pension at 55 because I enrolled in the 55/25 program through the DOE. I will likely have 30 yrs by 55 (depending on how many yrs i take off for my kids it might be 56, 57).
I chose 55-60, but it will be closer to 55, unless I want to keep working.

Re: Retirement Age
I'm eligible for my pension at 57, but my youngest won't graduate college until 59, so there is no doubt that I will be working until at least then and maybe a year or two more to get the slight % pension increase.
SS increases tremendously if you can wait until 67 or 70 (rather than 62 or 65), so we plan to wait to collect that until then and live off pension and investments.

I won't be working full time after 55, plan to do consulting work and then figure out my next plan.

Re: Retirement Age
i work for the government. As early as possible. I think i qualify at 57? My kids should be out of college by then, and if they not, I am still retiring.

Re: Retirement Age
I answered I'll never retire, but it wouldn't be because that's what I wanted. Unfortunately there has been some extremely bad economic downfall in my family and I will probably be up until I croak at my desk

Re: Retirement Age
I will never retire..there will never be enough money considering SS won't be available to me.
I will have a retirement account to rely on but I feel that my healthcare costs will eat a good amount of that. Unless I win the lottery I will have to work until I can't.

Re: Retirement Age
I have no idea. I have a very flexible job where I make my own hours , so I might continue on a few hours a week when I'm older.

Re: Retirement Age
I have no idea! Ideally, I would love to be fully retired by 60. I hope to be working part time by 55. DH is up for retirement @ 47....although I doubt he will retire.
I guess we need to speak to a financial planner to figure it all out.

Re: Retirement Age
I have never even thought about this. Maybe because I only joined the workforce a year ago, but this is definitely not on my radar. My parents are both 60 and have no plans to retire. I guess I don't see myself retiring until I'm physically incapable. But I would probably drastically cut back on hours.

Re: Retirement Age
I picked "never" because I'm 99% sure I wont have the funds necessary to live a decent lifestyle on my retirement funds when I reach 55 or 60.
I just qualified for my company's pension plan 2 years ago and my 401K is pretty tiny since I was in graduate school and didn't start earning a good income until my early 30s.. At the rate I am going, I dont think I will ever retire. I dont want to be in my father in law's shoes, who retired at 62 and is now approaching 80 with barely enough remaining in his retirement accounts to survive the current economy another 10 years.

Re: Retirement Age
I don't know if I will, but not for necessity.
DH's grandfather is 86. WWII vet, retired NCPD, still works as a security guard a couple of days a week. He likes to keep busy and likes the interaction with people. I could see myself doing something like this, keeping busy in some way. I get stir crazy when I have nothing to do!

I did this as well- I will actually have the service at 50. But I don't think I'll last at the DOE till I'm able to retire. I've decided to quit before they are able to fire me.
Beyond that, I don't know when I'll fully retire.

Re: Retirement Age
I have only been working full time for 2 years so retirement is far away. We are on track with where we want to be and have a large amount saved for retirement already in our 20s, but retirement age will depend on where we decide to settle down and the COL, how much we like our jobs and what kind of career changes we make down the road, our health, etc. We plan to travel a lot in our retirement and may choose to work longer than we "need to" to have more disposable income compared with people like my inlaws who plan to retire out to a farm in the middle of nowhere with minimal expenses.

Re: Retirement Age
I don't know...I may never 'retire' but I'm in transition and from here on out will not ever really have a 'desk' job again. Can't teach dance or just dance forever but writing - I can always do that.
