retirement contribution question

NYC DOE teachers- how much do you contribute to your retirement? My husband (who is a teacher) does 10%. If I do that much I wont be taking home enough.

Does anyone do less than 10%?

Do you mean in your TDA? Because what you contribute to your retirement is based on what tier you're in. The only thing you can change precents on is your TDA. http://www.nysut.org/members/retirees/teachers-retirement-system

I did 13 wanted to move it to 15 and apparently I got kicked off when I was on maternity leave and went off payroll. Can't change it until school starts.

Apparently I was wrong - just checked and I was able to change it.

Re: retirement contribution question

I did 10% when I first got hired and always left it there. I'm so glad I did bc it really accumulated... But then again that was 10 years ago... Pre marriage and baby lol so I never felt it. Straight out the gate is best... Otherwise u never increase it bc u end up missing the money too much... Which is why mine stayed at 10% and I never bumped it up even though my pay increased.

For the tda (403b), you can do as little or as much as you want. I was putting in 10%, but we upped mine 3 or 4 years ago to the max the government allows.

TDA I put 10 percent. I would like to up it to 15 percent at some point. I started with 3 percent and increased it over time. Do what you can afford.
