Right to delay vaccines????
For those of you who have researched or decided to delay some vaccines, what are our rights as parents to do so? Can I tell my pediatrician that I want to delay them, and does she have to follow my wishes? Or do I have to find a doctor that us willing to deviate from the CDC schedule?
TIA
**Also, please recommend your ped. if they split or delay shots..thanks! Please FM if you don't want to post.

Some drs wont take DC as a patient if you will not abide by their schedule. I had a rough time finding someone that would agree to split them up.

You can ask your ped if they delay shots, if they do, then they will do it for you. But it is their business and they do not have to change the way their office works just for one patient if they do not want to.
Plenty of peds do it, so it wouldn't be a problem finding another.

Re: Right to delay vaccines????
It is your right as a parent to delay or split vaccines as you want, however, some dr's will not and do not want to for their own personal reasons.
I spoke with my ped. before DS was born and he said he would have no problem delaying or splitting certain vaccines and we developed our own vaccine schedule.
DS did not get the hep shot in the hospital (nor did my ped. think it was necessary). My ped. gives at most 2 shots at a time, however, I opted for just 1. It meant more office visits for me but it didnt matter to me. We did 1 shot a month and if DS was sick we skipped that month completely. I have not given DS the flu vaccine or chicken pox vaccine and at 23 months, he still has not gotten the MMR vaccine. When I decide to give it to him, probably this summer/fall, it will be split which is the only way my ped. administers the shots at this time.

Re: Right to delay vaccines????
I delay. My doctor has no problem and is a neonatologist and has never said one word for me doing it and understands why. You can fm me for his name if interested. He is willing to split my MMR and as well as delay them-it is more money because it is special ordered. if you have any other questions def fm me..

Same here, and I was actually asked to leave a practice because I refused the Hep vaccination at the delivery (even though DH and I both tested negative only a week before). Our Ped will split what she can (she has no more MMR to split), and we work out a delay schedule together. She is great at letting us work together and discussing the medical aspect of our schedule.

Re: Right to delay vaccines????
A doctor can not administer a shot to your child without your permission; however, it is within their rights to refuse patients who want to delay or split the shots. There are many doctors out there who do not believe in splitting or delaying, having said that there are several peds out there who have no issue with delaying or splitting shots so the key is simply to find one who is willing to do so. Also more holistic or DO's tend to be more lenient in this aspect than many MD's do. I would call the office before you go and speak to them about their policies before making an appt so you are not surprised.

Re: Right to delay vaccines????
Thanks for all the replies. I was uncertain as to if we have the right to refuse a shot or delay it.
I am going for DS's one month visit tomorrow, and I have decided to delay the Hep B shot for my own reasons..and I don't know how the Dr. is going to react to that. I had already asked her if she would split the MMR and she said no. So I think I might have to look for a new Dr. We'll see what happens tomorrow.

Re: Right to delay vaccines????
unless im mistaken (shrug) AJ still hasn't received the Hep B shot.
I find it unnecessary and Im strongly against over dosing my child with unnecessary shots/meds.
I delayed only a little so far. She got her 2month shots in full and on time. At 4months I refused shots due to illness (she wasnt feeling 100%) at 5months she got her 4month shots. At 6months shots were declined by the doctor as not enough time has lapsed. At 7months she'll get those 6month shots and we'll go on from there.

While you have the right to refuse one that is being offered - keep in mind that there are specific rules when you want to send your child to daycare, preschool and ultimately school as to what they need. So make sure you know the law if you are thinking of doing more than saying no for now and delaying until a later date.
