Nope. I have heard noting but horrible things.
Please clarify "horrible".
I am sorry, but I take offense to this being that is where my kids will go. Do you have first hand experiences?
I find too many people have opinions with no basis and I am curious. Thanks.

Re: Riverhead High School
Trailers??? That really isnt the issue. I was in a trailer at St Josephs college and spent a ton per semester and did great and for my masters went to suny SB and also had a class in a trailer. Big deal, really. Like others said, being a good parent is the objective not necessarily the environment. Your child could fall through the cracks in any environment if they arent brought up well.

Re: Riverhead High School
I dont understand why people get all bent out of shape when things like this are brought up. Its just a fact, there are some districts that are better than others, end of story. Just bc the issues in one district dont bother you, doesnt mean they cant bother someone else. We are all entitled to feel one district is more appropriate than another and a better fit for OUR OWN children.
While some may like Riverhead, thats fine, but just bc you do, doesnt mean someone else has to be OK with sending their kids there.

It's sensitive to me because it's like someone commenting on my parenting. If you think it's a horrible school, do you think I am a horrible person for sending my kids there? Yes, then I do take it personally and will get bent out of shape.

no, no one said any such thing. Like I said, to each his own.....Im sure there are districts you wouldnt send your kids too. What is desirable to one person, isnt to another. Every district has its issues, its all a matter of someone's personal preference. No one made any statement about anyone's parenting, that is on you.
Would I send my son to Riverhead, absolutely not. DS is going to go to Smithtown, which has its own share of issues......some people may not being willing to overlook my districts issues....I am. I dont care if someone else doesnt want to send their kids there, bc they arent my kids and my son isnt theirs. You need to be confident in your decision and just understand that what is for you, may not be for someone else.

Re: Riverhead High School
I have a student who just transferred from there to the hs that I work at- while I think all HSs aren't always what they seem and parent involvement plays a key role in how successful students are in their education, what makes me nervous about riverhead is just the daily safety of the students. She told me that there are fights every day. And she would worry about getting jumped every single day. This makes me nervous. Yes, we have and occasional fight in our hs- but not like that.
eta: There are going to be successful and unsuccessful students at every hs... kids that have good experiences and bad experiences no matter where you go...

Memi, I do agree with your comments. People do have their own opinions which is 110% fine, but when you start putting words like "horrible" on it, that is what gets me fired up. A simple "no", or "our choice is not to send our children there" would be sufficient. KWIM?

I know a ton of cops who work out there, all say the same thing. Drugs Gangs Crime Attacks on students I also have a friend who went there She said the same thing.
It has nothing to do with your parenting, because you send you kids there, or will send them there.
Thats like saying because I went to Bayport and lived south of Middle we were loaded, far from it.
The OP asked if we ( collective we) would send our kids there? I wouldnt. I dont think less of or have a problem with those who will. I just wouldnt.

Re: Riverhead High School
I know nothing about this district because it's really far away from me, but honestly, anytime you post a question like this on LIF, be prepared to hear answers you are not going to want to hear.
It's like posting about money and politics.
Honestly, where you send YOUR kids is YOUR personal choice.
Someone is always going to have something to say, even if you can afford to send them to the best damn private school on Long Island.
We live in a rough district, and I don't post about it on LIF because I KNOW people are gonna have something to say about it. It's obvious, I know that. Anyways........
It's nice out, it's a holiday weekend, let's focus on that.

Thank you, "Heard" isn't experienced. I graduated in 2004 mid "gang violence" and it's a matter of the media making an interesting story over a couple of kids brawling. Have you heard anything about their advanced music and foreign language programs?
dont most people choose the towns they live in and send their children to schools in, based on what they have "heard". Tons of people move out of the towns they grew up in into other towns based on a towns reputation, what they have heard about the district and not direct experience. If that were they case everyone would live in the towns they grew up in. I dont see anything wrong with choosing one town over another based on reputation and what you have "heard". Its part of what forms YOUR OWN personal opinion. I wouldnt try a restaurant if I "heard" from a bunch of close friends or family that the food and service were "horrible". This is the same thing, just on a larger scale. What one chooses to base their own personal decision on, be it experience or reputation is their prerogative.

Re: Riverhead High School
Most ppl (IMO) chose to live in towns they can afford first. If you have the $ to send your child to a private sch so be it. There are towns where taxes are $22k and kids use trailers for class. If you really concerned contact the school yourself google it.. look at test scores or parent reviews. My son does to the elementary schl in Riverhead district after 2 yrs of Charter school.. he is very happy & getting great grades. His class room is equiptmed with that lastes teaching technology and he seems to be thriving. I do know there is tight security at the RHS. Good Luck with whatever you choose!
PS:My b/f graduated from there and there and it was like anyother schl.. you got your difficult kids, fights and the good ones.

The diverse thing isn't really the issue with Riverhead. In regards to logistical issues... they have a large portion of the school district teaching in TRAILERS. What kind of environment is this? Kids have to troop to trailers in during the hottest days in the spring/fall, as well as the coldest snowiest days in the winter. How about trooping to these trailers in the pouring rain?
My niece didn't even have textbooks at the start of her last school year and didn't have them for months. How do you expect to learn with no textbooks? What kind of a school doesn't hand out textbooks? Oh and they didn't even hand out pamphlets or dittos either. School said it doesn't have the money to do this.
Sorry but these are signs that this SD is in serious trouble.
Here we go, you again with all the answers
I recall having to attend classes in trailers in the " famed" 3 village school. What would you rather? They squeeze all those kids into a classroom with less teachers? The students have to go somewhere until a new school gets built. Dammed if you do dammed if you don't

DH's cousin lives in that district and they send their children to Bishop-McGann Mercy HS. Not sure if you are Catholic, but they are very happy with that school.
20+ years ago, when I went to RHS, everyone knew that Mercy was where the drug dealers were. It was a lot of rich kids, who had access to plenty of money, so at the time, I wouldn't want to go to that school. Riverhead was a great school for education. It had great AP courses, lots of extra curricular activities, and almost no gang activities. (I was friends with almost every group. The "nerds", the "jocks", I had a few friends that were into the drug scene... and got their supplies from Mercy students, so I saw pretty much the entire spectrum of students.) However, I'm sure a lot has changed in both schools in 20 years....
I honestly can't voice any meaningful opinion of the SD now, so I'm completely out of the loop there.

Re: Riverhead High School
its a hard one realy. I mean your going to be faced with drugs and "bad kids" in any school thats just the fact. It dosnt matter if its a "rich" school or middle class school drugs are EVERYWHERE. I like to believe that your child will do well wherever they are as long as you stay involved in their lives & show them the rights & wrongs. However i do know that riverhead has a lot of gangs. The violence of that would worry me a little more. My sister works at William floyd *another school with a bad name* and i will say that she says yes there are good kids that do well however they dont get the attention from the staff that they should because the other kids are SO BAD that all the attention goes to them, she says alot of the good kids just get lost in the crowd. Thats sad to me.

Re: Riverhead High School
DH's 2 cousins went to RHS and had good experiences. They graduated approximately 5-7 years ago. They were both good kids (involved in school, didn't get in trouble, etc) but neither were honors students. One actually has a physical disability and the district was accommodating to her. They both went on to 4 year colleges and the younger one is finishing up her degree this fall.
Another person in DH's family went to Mercy HS. He was involved with drugs but not excessively. He went on to college as well.
I grew up in one of the "top districts" on LI. There were drugs there. I really think it's anywhere if you look for it.

Re: Riverhead High School
I'm friends with a teacher in the HS, based on her comments I would opt for private school over Riverhead HS.
Drugs, gangs, violence, culture of passing students to move them along and out of district no mater what their grades/levels are.

Re: Riverhead High School
These threads always amuse me.
Generally speaking YES we all want a good district. BUT the best indication of how a child will do in school is how invested and interested their PARENTS are in their education.
Most LI teachers are highly qualified to perform their jobs as it is VERY hard to get hired in LI.
Yes some schools have gang and drug problems but generally speaking if your child is not hanging with the gang or snorting the crack they are FINE.
Parent your kids. That is the most important piece to any students success.

Nice snarky response. The facts speak for themselves. This SD is in a lot of trouble. There are major issues with fights, gangs, etc. I have family members that work in the district, graduated from the district, and currently attend the district. They see this behavior first hand. Other posters in this thread are posting similar stories, but of course you have to direct your snarky response to me. That's fine.
And it's not even like I am this big snob that has to send my kids to the best blue ribbon schools out there. There is a small list of schools I would NOT send my kids to. Riverhead is one of them.

It does not bother me when people say no.
It might bother others though when people are rude and condescending about it.
Not everyone can afford to live in Great Neck. And just so you know kids in Great Neck do bad things too. Kids in Brentwood do good things.
My point was that just because someone might not have the money to live in Great Neck does not mean that their child cannot get a good education.
A simple "no I would not send my child there" is fine. It is the HTH obnoxious answers that are bothersome.
