I know nothing about that school district, but if gangs and violence are more prevalent there, I would not send my kids there. Parents can only do so much. I could have an honor roll student who does everything he is supposed to but that won't help him if he gets caught in the crossfire of a gang fight.
Of course gangs are everywhere, but why pick a school where, say, 15% of the students are in a gang as opposed to another school where 1 or 2% of them are gang members?
It's not a race/racism issue. Its just an unfortunate fact that the majority of gangs are dominated by African-American and Hispanic members.
Speaking only for myself, I totally get what you are saying. That's not to say though that I personally don't think a lot of people can be racist in general when it comes to school districts.
I have heard MANY people say out loud that they would not want to send their kids to certain districts because there are too many blacks and latinos there...........and it has nothing to do with gang activity that they say that.
I also have heard worse terminology used but I am not going to post that obviously. I think everyone's smart enough to know what I am getting at.
ETA: These are not just random people off the street either. They are reputable people, that you may know from your place of business, they are well-known in the local community, or perhaps they are even your kids teacher.
I'm not looking to start an argument, but to deny that there is a certain racial undertone in existance when it comes to choosing school districts is silly. Long Island, NY is one of the most racist places I've lived and I came from the boonies.
Oh believe me, I totally agree with you as well - my own father has been known to make statements like that
That being said, I didn't see any racism, real or implied, on here, only fear of gangs and violence.

I agree with the last comment. I don't think there was anything racist about this thread.

Re: Riverhead High School
For the record, I wasn't talking about this thread per se (honestly I don't have time to go back through every single reply).
I am however talking about something I have witnessed off the boards in general here on LI when it comes to school district talk.
So if it's going on with "decent" people I come across in my daily life, I am sure there are LIFers out there who probably think the same things, but are going to choose their words more selectively when posting on a thread.
Another poster brought up the issue of the racial undertones and yeah, I have noticed it IRL much more than just an undertone...........THAT was my point.
