Re: Riverhead High School
No, I would not send my kid there.
FYI, Commack HS has used trailers for years due to overcrowding, and I would send my children there in an instant, so it has nothing to do with that.

Re: Riverhead High School
I graduated from RHS in 1996. Would I send my kids there? NO.
I had a solid educational experience there but in 1992 there were security guards and frequent fights after basketball games. I hung out with a good crowd of people but I can remember specifically after several basketball games there being brawls where the cops were called, not to mention when one of kids got thrown through the trophy case glass. Every school has its good and bad, but I don't think I would have sent my children there in the 90's. I cannot speak for what it is like now.

Re: Riverhead High School
I can't really comment on RHS, because I don't know anything about the school now. I was good friends with a few people who graduated mid-late 90's and they all did well.
What I can tell you is that, as a pp suggested, the "good" school districts often just have more money to put up screens to hide the "bad" stuff. I went to a "good" school that had quite a bit of money.......there were kids on the corner every day at lunch smoking pot, the deli at the corner of the street was raided on a regular basis for drug busts, we had a girl stab another in 9th grade and a classmate commit suicide from drugs in 10th.....the school district was REALLY good at sweeping things under the rug!
Appearances are not always what they seem....

I don't buy this line of reasoning one bit.
If you think the "good" districts can sweep things under the rug better and everything is supposedly the same on the inside... how do you explain the difference in test scores between the districts? Are you going to say the results for the good districts are staged? How about the fact that more students in a "good" district go on to college vs. Riverhead? How do you explain that the cops are called to Riverhead HS way more than a HS in a "good" district.
I won't even use the best districts like Jericho in my example. Take a district that is considered "good" like Massapequa. Look at the Massapequa statistics and look at the Riverhead statistics. There is a HUGE difference.
And it's not even about wealthy housing and homeowners. Look at Levittown SD. The Levittown numbers are also way better than Riverhead. The graduation rates are better. The test scores are better. The number of students going on to college is better. And it's not even close. You can purchase housing in the Levittown SD for 300k now, so we aren't talking about 800k and up Great Neck properties to get into a "good" district.

.
I explain it by saying that their PARENTS care about their grades and education. MORE parents in good districts are involved so the numbers are higher.

In all fairness, I believe academically, they're not a "terrible" school.
However, I will say this. In order for my STBX's niece to take AP classes her parents had to pay for it which in comparison to other districts is NOT common.
However, I think the bigger issue with Riverhead HS is the VIOLENCE, not just drugs. So those who keep comparing RH to other "better" districts saying they all have problems with drugs, yes I agree. But NOT all schools have the issues Riverhead has with violence.
They have a VERY REAL gang issue. The police patrol the school in addition to security guards.
This is NOT made up.
Girls CANNOT wear headbands due to GANG AFFILIATION. This is not hearsay, I know this for a fact.
I get that academics are VERY important but I think having my child feel safe in their school is equally important and contributes to how well they do. With that in mind, I wouldn't send them to this school.
Again, I said it in a prior post...There's a reason, my STBX's niece lives in Riverhead and her mom drives her everyday to St. Anthony's in Huntington.

I can not and would not argue any of your points. My post didn't speak about test scores, or graduation rates. In fact, many of the responses to this post have mentioned NOTHING about test scores, merely spoke to things like violence, drugs and gangs....
I did not say that all was the same on the inside...My point was simply that you can not assume that if you have a school considered "good" or "safe" that these things will never happen. They happen...perhaps not as often, perhaps never to your child. But one can not be so naive as to think that those issues do not occur in a "better" school.
The test scores and graduation rates are publicly available statistics. I merely was trying to note that I personally don't feel you can judge a school on test scores alone. There are schools whose test scores are high, whose graduation rates are high and in whom, if you were to speak to some of the students, drugs, violence and other "not so nice" things happen often...

Re: Riverhead High School
My spouse posts on here and I l snoop around from time to time. This post was really interesting to me just because I am a 1996 graduate from RHS. One of my parents still works in the high school and my niece is in the middle school. Many of my friends kids are in the district as well. Normally people defend where they have grown up but I would be the first to trash the district. The main problem with Riverhead district is the overcrowding and lack of funds to fix the problem. My mother’s and my father’s houses are in the Riverhead district. One house in Wading River and the other in Calverton on almost on an acre of property paying under 5,000 a year in property taxes. Please understand the funding necessary to run the district is not there. With that said, please keep in mind my hour bus ride to and from school… I hated it. Riverhead School District is big and some houses are 15+ miles away from the school. We talk about the trailers, you do realize its do the overcrowding and because the funds aren’t there for a new school that it’s the LONG TERM solution. Overcrowding has led to this: The kids are not allowed to wear their jackets in school or bring a book bag to school. The kids must take their jackets off first thing and put them in their lockers. They are given one large binder in the beginning of the year and everything must fit in there and that is all they can carry. They cannot carry anything else and if the teacher feels some of the girls pocketbooks are to big they are asked to change it. The kids are on different bells (yes two sets of bells) all this because they can’t have them in the halls at the same time. The middle school is built so small just like an elementary school…very small. Some kids share lockers, and yes there are some problem with petty theft. Actually they were thinking of removing one grade from having lockers so the other grades don’t have to share, never asked if that happened. Education level: The kids sometimes wait for the ONE and only ONE workbook they get for the year for months sometimes. You also talk about the Smart boards and the kids not needing text books but as an eighth grader only four of your classes have them and one class being Music class..true facts people. What kind of education do you think these kids are really getting. I always ask her how do you study for your tests and she said she just copies from the board and test aren’t that hard. I’m very thankful for the most part she is a really smart kid. Safety level: My niece says there is a fight everyday but I remember that from my days as well but not to the point where we couldn’t wear headgear (yes no head gear not even for the girls). My 13 year old niece is all up on the gang traits and knows who to stay away from. DRUGS…well they are everywhere!! If anything we were just potheads because we couldn’t afford much else, OK I just gave the school a +++. The parent who works in the high school says this all the time “if your child wants and education your child will get an education in any school”….. But she also says this …”THE WORST PART OF MY JOB IS DEALING WITH THE FIGHTS THAT CAUSE SEROUS INGURY. EACH YEAR SOME KIDS HEAD IS SLAMMED INTO THE MARBLE FLOORS AND IS LEFT WITH BRAIN SWELLING AND BLEEDING.” And “I HATE HAVING TO DEAL WITH THE POLICE EVERYTIME SOME KID’S PARENT COMES UP THERE TRYING TO FIGHT A STUDENT”. So if you need to own a house and all you can afford is Riverhead than go for it, just don’t expect your kids to get a scholarship to any college because the academic level is not there. If you can spend a little more go for Mattituck, Shoreham, or Rocky Pont. The school just is going down hill!!!

Yeah really, this is offensive to me. I live in a great block, could certainly afford to live elsewhere but chose this area. There is a great sense of community where I am. Kids do poorly in school because of absentee parents. I have noticed that the LIF mentality is blame it on the schools

Re: Riverhead High School
I know nothing about Riverhead district, but I had a choice between the excellent (but higher taxes) school district I currently live in, or a neighboring (lower taxes and home prices) school district which is one of the worst in all of Long Island.
Ultimately, I'm not that worried about test scores. I don't care about trailers, overcrowding, lack of textbooks, etc. I don't care about how many extracurricular activities there are or aren't. I care about SAFETY. All the resources and extracurriculars a school might have are worthless for me if the school is overrun with gang activity and my kid is scared to go each day.

I also sense an undertone of racism on these types of threads I think its more of a "behind the screen" approach. Never would one state half the opinions that are in this thread in a professional setting. Its called "foot in the mouth" syndrome. Lots of this cr@p going on with these boards lately.

I've heard people actually say racist comments about various school districts at one time or another IRL.
So what may not be written out, you can be darn sure people are thinking it.

It's no secret that Riverhead has a higher minority population than the mainly caucasion districts that everyone on here says are "great" - that is the undertone I refer to

Yes, but people on this thread are quoting actual statistics, re: graduation rates and test scores. I think what you are referring to is the talk about gangs. But- gangs exist in this school district! There is no refuting this. If people in some of the gangs happen to be a minority then that is a fact, not an accusation. I'm still not sure how that's racist.

I wouldn't send my kids there, but that is not a judgement on someone who chooses to do so. Everyone's situation is different, if it was affordable to all, I'm sure most parents would choose the award winning districts, but that's not reality for everyone.

Re: Riverhead High School
I know nothing about that school district, but if gangs and violence are more prevalent there, I would not send my kids there. Parents can only do so much. I could have an honor roll student who does everything he is supposed to but that won't help him if he gets caught in the crossfire of a gang fight.
Of course gangs are everywhere, but why pick a school where, say, 15% of the students are in a gang as opposed to another school where 1 or 2% of them are gang members?
It's not a race/racism issue. Its just an unfortunate fact that the majority of gangs are dominated by African-American and Hispanic members.

Speaking only for myself, I totally get what you are saying. That's not to say though that I personally don't think a lot of people can be racist in general when it comes to school districts.
I have heard MANY people say out loud that they would not want to send their kids to certain districts because there are too many blacks and latinos there...........and it has nothing to do with gang activity that they say that.
I also have heard worse terminology used but I am not going to post that obviously. I think everyone's smart enough to know what I am getting at.
ETA: These are not just random people off the street either. They are reputable people, that you may know from your place of business, they are well-known in the local community, or perhaps they are even your kids teacher.
I'm not looking to start an argument, but to deny that there is a certain racial undertone in existance when it comes to choosing school districts is silly. Long Island, NY is one of the most racist places I've lived and I came from the boonies.
