sad... all pet owners PLEASE READ!
Last Tuesday our family dog Gizmo started vomiting. We brought him to the vet first thing Wednesday morning and he was diagnosed with Leptospirosis. Its a bacterial disease that humans and animals can catch from urine from infected animals, such as raccoons and squirrels.
The vet said we caught it in the early stages and he was looking pretty good. We were told he had to stay in the hospital for a minimum of 5 days for antibiotic treatment and fluids bc he was dehydrated. He was also showing sign of Jaundice.
This was a new vet because we have not been happy with our previous vet. Let me tell you the office was wonderful, they called several times a day to give us updates on Gizmo.
Saturday he was looking up, the vet said he went out for a walk and his spirits were high.
Sunday night he took a turn for the worst. The vet called at 9:30pm and said that Gizmo wasnt responding to the medicine and he wasnt doing so good. She said that they were doing everything they can and we might have to make a "decision" soon. My dad said to give him through the night to see how he does and call us in the morning.
My dad called at 9am on Monday morning and the vet informed him that poor little Gizzy just passed away 10 minutes prior. He had kidney failure and his little body couldnt take it anymore.
He was 12 years old but he was a VERY healthy spunky dog.
The reason im posting this to inform all other pet owners that there is a vaccine for this disease!!!! No one in my family has heard of it until now but apparently it is pretty common. Our original vet, who cared for Gizmo for his whole life never informed us about this vaccine either... the NEW vet we just took him to last week knew all about the disease but it was too late for the vaccin. The downside is that it only lasts for approximately 6-8 months, so you will need to get a booster shot every year.
PLEASE look into getting the vaccine. it could have saved my dogs life...
heres a link with more info on LEPTOSPIROSIS and heres a pic of Gizmo.

Oh that's terrible!!! I'm so sorry for poor little Gizmo and you guys for your loss.
My first vet recommended we get that vaccine for Arnold so we did. I honestly can't remember if we get it with our current vet but I will be sure to check into this.
Again, I am SO sorry for your loss.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I have a Boston too and I know how special they are.
We have to urge our vet to give Cooper the Lepto vaccine each year because it's considered optional. Usually if you board your dog, this is a mandatory vaccination.
I'm so sorry and my thoughts and prayers are with your family.

I am so very sorry for your loss. Leptospirosis is a horrible disease. My vet makes this shot mandatory along with the rabies shot every year.

Re: sad... all pet owners PLEASE READ!
I had every intention of posting this, but every time I sit down to do it, i can't stop myself from crying.
I HATE that vet for not telling us about the vaccine - or even the disease - especially because wte live in an area with a high population of raccoons and squirrels. I want to tell her off. In fact, I'm posting her name here. I highly recommend staying away from Dr Lisa Rini on 25A in Northport/Fort Salonga. Clearly she does not have the best interest of her patients in mind.
He had so much life left in him. This dog saw me through a very hormonal high school (he would lick my falling tears when i'd close myself in my room and get it all out)...meeting my husband (he always loved him - would curl up at his feet all the time)... through college... at my wedding... and now my pregnancy and the birth of my son (he would snuggle my belly often - almost like he knew there was something in there.). He was so sweet, so loving, so cuddly - really, the perfect dog.
He was so non-chalant with the baby too. In fact, the last time I saw sweet Gizmo, my son was riding his back like a pony (with my assistance, of course.) I wanted my real baby to experience how much fun my furry baby was.
I had a bag packed and plans to visit him as soon as the vet opened yesterday. His favorite snack (carrots - i didn't expect him to eat them, but i know he'd get a lick in at least), a fleece blankie (he loved to be warm), and an ink pad to get his paw prints. He never made it to opening and that bag is still sitting by my front door.
I HATE that he died alone....probably on a cold table without the kisses he deserved. omg I can't ... my hormones are so out of whack so I'm probably taking this worse than I would have at another time, but omg, I really just can't. I don't even want another dog- I just want him. He was special.

Re: sad... all pet owners PLEASE READ!
OMG, I am soo sorry. How terrible! How sad. And how wrong of your vet to not educate you on this vaccine. My dogs have been getting it since they were puppies, b/c my vet told me it's fairly common and humans can catch it. So he always vaccinated them for it with my consent.
I feel terrible for you all. How heartbreaking. I am glad you posted a PSA.

Oh Shorty, I am sooo sorry. MY heart is breaking here for you. He sounds like a wonderful dog and loyal friend.
I can't believe vets aren't suggesting their patients get this. What dog doesn't encounter other animal's urines???

I'm sorry for your loss!
Our Thunder died in February due to kidney failure. The vet was fairly certain that his kidney challenges initially began from exposure to Lepto.
