i am so sorry to hear of your loss - that's absolutely horrible.
my breeder told me not to get that vaccine but my vet did! i am glad i lsitened to my vet!
thank you for the information
Why is the shot controversial? I am glad I did not know that, I might have said no to it, but I just did what my vet told me and get it for my dogs each year.
I am so sorry for you loss
The shot is controversial because there is a much higher incidence of allergic reactions/side effects (including death from the shot), and a lot of experts advise against giving it to small breed dogs. The vaccine only protects against five strains of this disease, and there are about 15 different strains out there.
Once again, I am so sorry. I have first hand experience lepto (it permanently damaged my dog's kidney, she did survive, but has recently passed because of other medical issues.)

BUMP - the weather is getting nicer, both humans and dogs will spend more time outside.
Please be aware of this disease and speak with your vets about the vaccine!

Re: sad... all pet owners PLEASE READ!
I know this is old but so sorry about Gizmo
I'm glad you are educating people about this. We live in a wooded area and my vet never mentioned it. A friend mentioned that she'd gotten her dog the shot. So, I asked my vet about it, explained where we lived, and she agreed it was a good idea. So, my girl got the shot this year. I guess my point is that it's good to spread the word because not all vets think to mention it.

Re: sad... all pet owners PLEASE READ!
I'm so sorry this happened to your pup. Lepto is horrible. My mom's Teddy had gotten Lepto a little over 5 years ago, when Lepto really wasn't known per say. Teddy turned out to be a Lepto survivor, it was a long horrible journey to get to that point. He was being taken care of by a female doctor at the Oakdale vet hospital. He was there for three weeks and the Dr. would go in overnight to take care of him, eventually she nursed him back to health, Thank God. But unfortunately ended up passing away from cancer about a year later. Our Teddy was a rare case of survival.
With that said and the OP's post. There is a Lepto vaccination available through your vet, and is highly recommended. And yes, it's a zootic disease so humans can get this. Always make sure your pet has fresh water when left outdoors. When letting them out in the morning make sure you replace the water with a clean bowl with fresh water as believe it or not racoons, squirrels whatever can drink from the bowl, pee etc.
