We had an outpouring of love and support when CJ was in need of blood donations and there were many people on LIW that went and donated. We swore we would always pay it forward. DH's blood was tested back then and I can't think of what is different but most babies and children going through surgeries can accept his blood. I've already called him and let him know!

Also what blood type is he (does it matter)? Sorry for all the questions, but I am getting my family involved and they are asking.

Oh Val, I'm so sorry for your nephew.

My family and I can't donate blood in the US b/c we lived in the UK in the early 80's. But I'll pass the info along to other family members in case they are able to donate now.

Yes...I DO think you mention Michael's name when donating. The platelets will be reserved for him, then any unused will be given to other patients. But I do know that he needs to be on chemo for a whole year (this has just begun), and will need transfusions throughout the year as well.

I have Thalessemia as well, and am unable to donate. It truly breaks my heart. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I don't think blood type matters. I reread the email from his mom and it said all blood types are welcome.

DH has the blood type used for babies (O something). We'll plan on going in to donate in a month or so to make sure there's a continuous supply for this little guy. Chat Icon

Re: Sad x-post

Oh my goodness..... that is beyond horrible.

I have thalassemia as well (what an anemic group we seem to be here!), but DH can donate, and likely will do so when I show him the post later.

Please, please let us know how Michael is doing. And please let his family know that there is another family praying for his wellness, and for continued strength during this tough time.

If there are any efforts that are onging to make their holidays special, I'd love to contribute.

Re: Sad x-post

Jim thanks you all for your prayers and donations.

He also said that you would need to make an appointment and mention Michael's name. They will take any blood type. If it is not a match for Michael, they will use it for someone else and he will get a credit. It is really expensive to get a transfusion and this will help with their cost.

AGAIN...thank you so much!!!!!!

Re: Sad x-post

Im going to see what DH and I can do, we will be in the city on Saturday so it wouldnt be too much of a hassle since we'll have DD with us.

Are there any restrictions with blood donations? Im not to familiar with it..

They have the restrictions on the website. Mostly stuff like being out of the country within the year, certain diseases etc

Re: Sad x-post

I called and you do have to go to the city to donate.

Unfortunately you also could not have had surgery within the past year so I am out because of my c-section.... Chat Icon

I feel like I have been pregnant forever...(DS is 2 and DD is 8 months)- I am the universal donor so I am eager to donate when DD turns a year.....
