Re: Saddest moment of your life

When my father told me my grandfather passed away. I was so filled with regret for not going to visit him for a long time. My other saddest moment was when DH was diagnosed with cancer.

Watching my SIL trying to give birth to her son. We already knew he was unlikely to survive the delivery because of a heart condition, but she was hoping for a miracle so that she would be able to hold him even if it was just for a minute. After hours & hours of labor, they started to tell her she could rest for 10 minutes. I had gone out in the hall during her break. The doctor came out & said "Are you ok?" I broke down crying and said "You know if there's any chance Nicholas is still alive, if you tell her, she'll push him out with all of her might. But since you're giving her so much time to rest, I think he's gone and she's not pushing all the way because she's afraid of what she's going to find out." Then the doctor who had been with us all night started crying too. She said "Ok, we'll check her." They brought in 2 doctors to do the fetal echocardiogram.

To this day, I can hear her wails in my head when I think about this.

Second place would be 10 minutes after her c-section. I was asked to photograph him for her since she & her husband were never going to see him again. My BIL held him. I could barely see through the viewfinder through the tears.

Not sure if it is because I am a mom or what but I am hysterical right now. It is so horrible what she had to go through. Chat Icon

Re: Saddest moment of your life

I have 2.

The first was when my younger brother, mom, dad and I were on a cruise ship in the middle of the Atlantic and received word that my older brother who had stayed behind to work, had been killed in a car accident.

The second was 10 years later. I was staying at my parents while waiting to move into my new apartment in Tn. My parents had gone out to lunch and I was working out with the program Bodies in Motion. My doorbell rang and through the peephole I saw a policeman standing on the porch. He informed me that my younger brother ,who a couple of months before had gone off to college, had been killed in a car accident. Having to call my parents at lunch and ask them to come home was the hardest call I have ever made.

It is amazing how much we never know about each other's lives. As sad as this thread may be, it has put a personal connection to names and words I see posted on the internet everyday.

Re: Saddest moment of your life

There was a few...

But I would definitely have to say when my six month old nephew lost his battle to live. He wasn't given a good prognosis at birth but you seem to lose sight that "IT" can happen. He was making milestones that no one ever thought he could, so everyone got comfortable with the idea that he would live forever.

I came home from work one day and a neighbor/good friend of my SIL caught me outside. She seemed out of it and I was making general conversation with her. She kept looking at me odd, like why was I being so upbeat? So she finally said "Do you know when the wake will be?". I was like "What? What??" not really comprehending what happened. It hit like a ton of bricks. He was gone...

God bless you EricChat Icon 3/16/93 - 9/13/93

Re: Saddest moment of your life

I got a call the day after my 21st b-day that my dad had a stroke. He was physically disabled, but mentally awake, alert, talking and was going to be fine. I had friends en route from NY (I was in Boston in college)- so my mom told me to wait until Sunday and come home with my friends.

Sunday morning at 6 am I got a call- Come home now. I left my friends in my apartment, took a flight home and a cab to the hospital. My dad was unconscious. I walked into the hospital and asked the nurse if he was going to die. She said yes. That was my saddest moment.

I was with him for a few hours and then I left. He passed away a few minutes after I left.
