Sadness

I had no idea that losing a pet would cause me sooo much pain. I haven't cried this much since losing my Dad. I feel guilty that we didn't stay with Toby until he took his last breath. I feel guilty that we made the decision to put him to sleep too quick. We should have waited a little longer. I really feel like my heart is broken in two. I know I will feel better as the days go by but for today not so much.

I'm sorry you feel so sad. It is so hard when we lose a loved one (be it human, kitty, doggie, or other). I say let the tear out and let them go...one day at a timeChat Icon

I don't know if this will make you feel better. My brother and I were talking about his dog the other day. He said he had wished he had put his dog to sleep sooner than he had. He waited too long and if his dog had lived with more pain that she should have because he kept her alive.

So maybe sooner than later for your beloved pet was ok in the end? So sorry to hear your loss.Chat Icon

I am so sorry that you are going through this. I think guilt is felt whenever we have to make the terrible decision to put our beloved pets to sleep. Did we do the right thing? Was it too soon? Could anything else have been done? You did the kindest thing that you could have for your pet. I also have had an experience with waiting too long to put a pet to sleep and knowing that I let her suffer because of my own selfishness will haunt me forever. It is ok to be sad. It will ease in time. Many Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon to you.

I am so sorry. It does hurt so so much.Chat Icon It's human nature to question everything you did or did not do. Been there I can tell you. In time it does get easier, that's the most I can say.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I still think about the poem Kara posted, and how it's better to help them a week too soon rather than a minute too late. It's a very tough decision, but probably the most loving decision you will ever have to make for a pet. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Sadness

I'm so sorry you have to go through this. I know my mom has had to make this decision TWICE this year and it's devastating. Someone else posted a poem about it and it really hit home and made me feel a little better about making the decision. Let me see if I can find it.

ETA: Found it!

This it be Right" by Sarah Young

Better a week too soon, than a moment too late, they say.
Better while the eyes still sparkle, than wait 'til they dull.
Better while the good days outnumber the bad.
Better when it's hard for us, than hard for them.
It will never be easy for us.
As stewards of these great creatures,
We have the opportunity to give one final gift - Peace.
We grant them peace in lieu of our own
But granting peace, the end, when we wish for more
Eventually becomes a gift to ourselves
Knowing that we gave a final gift to one we cherished
Knowing it will leave an empty spot in our hearts
Doing it anyway
Because we DO love
That is what makes us human
For the love of my horse, I know who I am
And I know love.

Re: Sadness

I'm so sorry. The sadness is normal - you lost a member of your family. And like others said, better a day early than a minute too late. The last thing you want is for a pet to suffer. Chat Icon Chat Icon

I felt the same way about my dog from my childhood. My father called me and said it had to be done, the dog was 13 years old, deaf, partially blind, and lost control of her bladder at night. He lived with the dog and was the one to make the call. First time I ever heard him get choked up on the phone.

I went and said goodbye and she was happy to see me. Afterwards, I wondered if we did it too soon, if I should have stepped in and said, "not yet" and taken her to my house.

That poem definately helps.
But I remind myself (as you should too) that we gave that dog 13 great years, she was happy and loved. Hopefully we saved her from pain and it was her time. It's really such a hard decision to make.
