Safety in your home, let's see
Just a general discussion!
I was talking to DH last night about how we only have 1 flashlight in the entire house, no extra batteries and god for bid if something was to happen, we would be up the creek.
How many of you are actually "prepared" in an emergency, power outage, etc..?
We have a fire extinguisher in the kitchen, smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and I have an entire closet of candles (I am a nut with candles), but I really need to stock up on the other things.

I have 25 gallons of water 3 flashlights and a whole drawer always stocked with batteries, can opener, canned food, propane tank for BBQing, 3 first aid kits, and because of DH's business we have a number of generators and gas always at the ready

Re: Safety in your home, let's see
We were never prepared until we had that power outtage in the summer of 04 or whenever that was. We only had our cordless phones, and barely enough food to get by. After that I stocked up and we bought a traditional phone that can just connect to the jack. When we buy a home I will restock on non perishable food, etc.

Re: Safety in your home, let's see
we have a ton of batteries, a few flashlights, some canned food (always have veggies and tuna in my pantry), fire extinguisher and smoke and carbon monoxide alarms but now that I'm thinking about it, I don't have any bottled water stored.

Re: Safety in your home, let's see
Plenty of flashlights, tons of batteries. Several fire extinguishers. We always have a fairly stocked pantry. Even though we drink a lot of tap water, we still have plenty of bottled water in the house. We have tons of candles as well.
After we get our solar panels, and I see what I can run off just the panels, I plan on getting a generator that will just hold us for overnight. During the day, we should be able to run almost anything we need (within reason) off the panels. If we don't open the fridge when the sun is down, we probably don't even need a generator. The fridge/freezer should stay cold enough overnight, and once the sun comes up, the panels would allow the fridge/freezer to turn on again.

Re: Safety in your home, let's see
I have flashlights in most rooms. Need to replenish batteries, the toys use so many we are pretty much out. A fire extinguisher on each level of the house.
Have water, canned food, packaged food snacks (pretzels, crackers) for the kids. Extra propane tank for BBQ.
Corded phone in nightstand to switch to if needed.
I have fire escape ladders in all of the bedrooms.
Smoke & carbon monoxide detectors that talk in all bedrooms. 2 fire alarms and a heat sensor that are hooked up to our house alarm so if we are not home the fire department will be called anyway.

I have the heat sensors too hooked up to the house alarm system. 1 in the garage (bedrooms are over the garage). 1 in the boiler room, laundryroom, and 1 in the Attic.

Since we live in Hurricane Land we're always very well prepared. Our house also came with hurricane shutters that get put up when we are getting a hurricane towards us.

Re: Safety in your home, let's see
for those of you who said you have canned goods, do you have a manual can opener. That was the problem we found in 04. Never dawned on me we would need it.

same here, we have well water so I always keep tons of water in my spare freezer. we have a bunch of huge coolers too, I also have camping laterns and tons of flashlights & batteries. battery powered radio, sternos and other stuff. A few years ago when our relatives in Florida were going through hurricane hell DH started stockpiling emergency stuff. this summer he has already accumilated enough plywood to cover most of our windows.

Re: Safety in your home, let's see
The only thing we have is a natural gas generator, smoke and carbon monoxide We even wired the house for Fire and a Natural Gas leak wich is different than carbon monoxide
Once our basement is finished we will stock it with all kinds of emergency things, like water, first aid kids and extra food.
I really love the idea of those ladders that fold out in all the bedrooms
All my bedrooms are upstairs and the drop from the 2nd floor is SCARY!

Re: Safety in your home, let's see
We're somewhat prepared, but not 100%. We have lanterns, batteries, first aid kits, even a power source for our cell phones that runs off AA batteries in addition to our land line. Working on improving the handling of documents and important records too. I have some water but not as much as I should. Rotation on food and water is the most difficult for me to manage as I forget to use and replace what's stored.
Here's a link to the Red Cross site and the FEMA site on what you need to be prepared for various emergencies. Search around - they have some good info.
Red Cross - Storm preparedness
FEMA - Hurricanes

Re: Safety in your home, let's see
We have 2 fire extinguishers on the first floor (one in the kitchen and one in our hall closet). We also have one fire extinguisher in the finished basement and one on the second floor.
We have smoke alarms on every floor.
We generally always have bottled water somewhere in the house, but we don't intentionally stockpile it.
We have flashlights and tons of candles around in the event of a power outage.
