salary for a mechanical engineer in NY
what kind of salary does a relatively new mechanical engineer with a masters (very good gpa from a top school, not sure if that matters) command in NY/NYC/LI area?
DH and I currently live OOT while I'm finishing up law school, and I'm curious how salary here differs from NY. Law salaries differ pretty significantly. TYIA!

if I see my neighbor, I'll ask him. He is an Electrical Engineer but a vet.
I'll see if he knows.

Re: salary for a mechanical engineer in NY
Depends on work experience and internships. Engineering jobs are getting much more difficult to get. I work at a college and it used to be that every student could graduate and find a job immediately, and that's not so anymore. Jobs are harder to come by on LI, where you might expect $60,000 or so for someone right out of undergrad (more depending on experience), and NYC should pay higher.
We have a lot of engineering graduates with no job offers if they have no work experience, but I assume your DH has a couple years under his belt, which should make it much easier.
Here's some info I found online: In 2007 B.S.M.E. graduates in mechanical engineering received starting offers averaging $57,510 a year, M.S. Mechanical Engineering candidates had offers averaging $63,950, and new Ph.D.'s averaged $83,660.
You might be looking at $75,000 in NYC. With a great deal of experience maybe $100,000 depending on the company, but our career center doesn't see that often, even for PhDs.
But for you, my brother made $175,000 starting as a lawyer in NYC and also got a signing bonus.

Really? None of the grads where I work get offers in the six figures.

I work in the field with a lot of mechanical engineers and the salary definately varies. I would say and this ballpark and of course depends on experience/education/certifications 55k-150k.

Re: salary for a mechanical engineer in NY
out here in the midwest he's making between $60-65k (this is his second year on the job) and the big law firms pay $120k + bonuses etc.
the law jobs pay 160k+ bonuses in NYC so i was hoping the engineers would make more in NY too

Def. DH is one and most of his friends are also. I don't know one that makes less but they also graduated college years ago. They went to Maritime.

Re: salary for a mechanical engineer in NY
I'm a chemical engineer, hence my screen name <------------------
Supposedly, they are the highest paid of the engineering disciplines
MechE's, with less than 5 years experience will not be making 6 figures... I would say if he's making $65K out west, he can look to get at most $80K here and in a few years, with a higher level position will make more money.
Oh, is he a PE? I got my PE back in 2001 and my salary shot up after that. I was more in command.

I'm sorry, what is a PE? Clearly I'm not the engineer

Professional Engineering (PE) license. Once your licensed to practice, you become much more valuable to a company. Much like passing the bar to become a lawyer.
