Re: Sauce in a jar
I've never eaten jar sauce; I find fresh sauce so easy & comforting to make. Maybe it's all those years waking up on Sunday mornings at 8 a.m. to the smell of garlic and onions.
We make & freeze tons of sauce so we can eat it anytime.

Re: Sauce in a jar
$8 for a jar of tomato sauce?
If I'm making spaghetti, I'll use Ragu or Classico, depending what's on sale. But if I'm making lasagna or stuffed shells, I'll make the sauce.

Re: Sauce in a jar
I don't eat sauce in a jar and heres the reason...lol
The first & only time I ever brought home sauce in a jar I was 13 and had wanted to try it (I'm use to homemade sauce so I never had tried a pre made sauce before) My mother was so offended when I took the jar out of the bag and asked her to make pasta with it for dinner... if looks could kill (anyone with an off the boat Italian mother knows the look I'm referring to)... she taught me how to make fresh sauce that day and I've been doing it that way ever since

Francesco Rinaldi
specifically which one? a plain tomato, a meat....etc
Plain...I don't like meat sauce.
Me too--Rinaldi plain. I get it for $1 on sale. Sometimes I get Classico if it's on sale--basil flavored. I had a college roommate who only ate Rao's...Not worth the money IMO!

Re: Sauce in a jar
We mostly eat Trader Joe's marinara or arabiata, Classico roasted garlic or Classico 3 cheese, or Barilla Rustica or Puttanesca (which we get at Costco)
I really don't taste all that much difference in better jarred sauce and homemade sauce, since I don't eat meat-based sauces. So for me, it is not worth the time to make it. I know many people with disagree with me, but that is JMO

Re: Sauce in a jar
Ok, now I need to FM AJsMommy for the recipe.
And I wanted to add how I remember how my mom wasnt allowed to buy sauce, it had to be homemade but one time she was too busy and bought Prego or something and tried to hide the jar but my dad found it. He was like "thank god because I thought you couldnt cook!" to my mom. We never had jar sauce in the house again.

Re: Sauce in a jar
I make my own sauce, however, whenever I make chicken parm, I always use Vincents Medium Sauce. It's $5.99 a jar or more but it's so good w/chicken parm. It's on the spicy side though.

Re: Sauce in a jar
Rao's is my favorite, but only when I sale do I get it....
My husband is a CHEF, had his own restaurant, and he is fine w/ jar sauce. He'll even eat Ragu....I will not eat Ragu....But there are a few okay ones out there..Emeril is good. I don't eat much pasta and the salt content in the jars sauce is wow.....But I get what ever is on sale for the week--for him.

Re: Sauce in a jar
I have never eaten sauce from a jar.. I think my Dad would disown me if he ever spotted a jar in my house
I too have very Italian parents, and my Dad was also a chef... both my Mom and Dad makes the BEST homemade gravy EVER .. so why even try when I've grown up on the best (and they always give me lots to use when I need it)
DH actually is NOT a pasta person at all, so we hardly ever need it though

I like the Barilla sauces, but DH finds them too sweet. We both like the Masters Choice brand sauces, especially the Tomato Basil.
Has anyone else NEVER made tomato sauce in their lives??

Me me! I don't think I ever will. I am perfectly happy with Rinaldi's for $1 a jar! My MIL makes her own, and sometimes it is great, but other times I find it way too garlicy. It varies every time. Rinaldi's is always the same!

I'm sure I never will either! I have to work on learning to make traditional Jewish foods before I venture into the world of homemade sauce!

Re: Sauce in a jar
Ragu - Traditional or meat is what I usually get anything else is lost on DH.
I LOVE a good home made sauce, but DH does not like "lumps" so unless I want to strain all the goodness out of it... I may as well get the jarred
ETA: I do make my own Vodka sauce he likes that and its so easy.

I have made it on occasion, but I just don't think it is soooo much better. My brother is also a chef and he says in his opinion, the difference between a good jar of sauce and homemade is not worth the effort for him to make it at home.
I agree, there are other things I would rather spend time making if I am going to do a lot of cooking. But, then again I didn't grow up with a parent who would make sauce either

Re: Sauce in a jar
We usually use Ragu. Pretty much almost any flavor except the meat ones and anything with garlic on the label - I like garlic, just not LOTS o'garlic. I have tried to make sauce, but it is so hard to get anyone to give me an actual recipe - I have asked my dad, my grandma, my aunt, my cousin, and they all tell me "It's so easy - just some of this, a little of that, a pinch of something else." All I want is an actual - 1 cup this, 2 tlbs that, etc... I'm not good without exact measurements.
Plus, it's so much easier to come home from work and say - "Honey, how about ravioli? Ok, here's the sauce" throw it in the microwave and voila.

I've had many different ones...but can only say I like a few.

I also make a pot EVERY Sun. and freeze leftovers.
