Sauce (Poll)

I use jar sauce 97% of the time. Sometimes in the winter I'll make some if I'm home all day.

I was told the difference between sauce and gravy is one has meat...I think gravy has meat.

Re: Sauce (Poll)

We make our own and jar it every August we make enough for the year. I would never touch jarred stuff except my own.

Sauce (Poll)

My mom used the jar sauce as a base and then kind of seasoned and made it her own. It's really good.

I make my own sauce, but I kind of cheat by using crushed tomatoes from a can as the base. I've never made it 100% from scratch because it's just a lot of work and I wouldn't even know what I was doing if I did.

But we do keep a jar of Ragu in the house so that I can make pasta for DD since she seems to like that more than the home made sauce.

I prefer making my own but if I need something in a pinch, I will use a jar sauce. But it can only be a certain jar sauce....Victorias Marinara or Rao's even Mama Lombardi's is decent.

This exactly

JAR. I'm 0% Italian and could never make a sauce. Growing up my mom used preggo and ragu.
DH makes a good sauce but its such a chore we usually just use jarred sauce.

And jar sauce has come a long way these days from the days when we were kids.
Some of them are excellent!

prefer to make my own. But sometimes I will use a jarred sauce. Some jars of sauce are better than others. I personally like Pomis marinara sauce and think it tastes closer to homemade than others. Key is to find which jarred or boxed sauce you prefer so you have it on hand as a back up.

THIS ...I can only use Vincents jarred sauced ...I will also use Victorias or Rao's if the store is out of Vincents. The other option is to go to the italian deli and buy their homemade sauce in a quart.

Yes the difference is...gravy has meat cooked in it (like Sausage, meatball, or braciole), then there is meat sauce which the meat is actually part of the base (Bolognese). then there is sauce, which is meatless.
Growing up we always had "gravy"

Depends for me. If I am making sauce (with meatballs, sausage, spare ribs), then I always make my own sauce. If I am making pizza or need a sauce for chicken parm, I usually go for the jar.

My mom used jar growing up. Now, she sometimes makes her own.

Growing up, I never, ever had jar sauce. Either my mom or grandmothers made it.

Now, I'll either make it (or really, DH will) or we'll have Rao's. Rao's is in a completely different category than, say, Prego or something like that! It's SO good, made with all the same stuff that is in homemade sauce. Restaurant quality.

I make my own - it's how I grew up.

The only jar sauce I keep in the house is vodka sauce. DH likes it once in awhile and asks for it out of the blue.

I don't keep vodka and heavy cream in the house unless we need it. So its easier to have a jar ready to open when he craves it last minute.

This is what DH says to me all the time... but I'm in the opinion of Gravy is Brown and sauce (with or with out meat) is red... Chat Icon

I make my own and always have some in the freezer when I need it.

I use jarred sauce about 95% of the time.

I have made my own, for holidays or once in a while if I just feel like it, but I don't think I'm very good at making it yet. When I do make it DH always says he likes the jar better.

Same thing in my Italian family ! Jarred sauce is a dirty word. Are you Italian?

Same here -

My Mom had the audacity to do it ONCE - on freakin' eggplant parm!
She spent ALL of that time frying eggplant - invited us for dinner. I was dreaming of it .......I took one bite and gave her the look of death. She started cracking up and turned 10 shades of red b/c my sister and I immediately called her on it.
Personally, I think she should be flattered that we can immediately tell the difference. She was annoyed that we thought it was gross .........

same here but since being with DH, who grew up on jarred sauce, I'm occasionally brought over to the dark side Chat Icon . I try to buy the most expensive jar lol to justify it. They sell one kind I've bought a few times in Eataly that is way better than any sauce I've ever made! (but not better than my moms)

Re: Sauce (Poll)

If I didn't work everything would be homemade but sadly I do and that's when jarred sauce comes in.

I make a killer sauce for a Jewish kid from Brooklyn but time is not always on my side.

Raos, Mamma Lombardis and a few others do the trick especially when I want a 3 cheese or vodka sauce.

Fresh here! Every Fall we do up about 30q and 30p of sauce and then do 45q diced tomatoes and 20p diced for cooking through the year. It's our preservation week lol. We do a shit ton of canning and freezing that week.

To answer the question we do use both because we always run out of our own, but i'm hoping this is the year we figure out how many to make.
