Scheduling A C Section Just Because You Want Your Doctor To Do It
Has anyone scheduled a C section just so that you will have your doctor be the one to do it?
When I went for my 1st prenatal visit my doctor said I'm pretty sure this will be another C section. She said this because she delivered my first by cesearean. He was 11 pounds and in a position where he couldn't come out naturally. She also said if I wanted her to deliver this baby that I should schedule a C section a week before my scheduled due date.
The hospital I'm affiliated with has a staff of doctors for the maternity ward so whoever is on call that night will be the person that delivers the baby. Of course I want my doctor but at the same time I would feel guilty making it a forced labor/delivery. What is your feeling about this?

Well, are you set on another C or did you want to try for a VBAC? Personally, I think I would opt for another C, and I ADORE my doc and would never trusst anyone as much, so I would schedule it. This is a decision only you can make though, for what is best for you and your family. GL!

Re: Scheduling A C Section Just Because You Want Your Doctor To Do It
If it were me and you have to have a C-section no matter what I would totally schedule it so my OB can do it. Since I had a C with Emerson when I get pg again I will be having another C so I am absolutely scheduling it with my OB who delivered Emerson. If you need a C I believe they always want to do it at 39 weeks, a week b4 your due date.

I'm only 12 weeks and I was surprised that when she saw me at 8 weeks she said "you know this will be another C right"
I would really like to have a natural birth if I can. If I schedule it it would be for no reason (medical wise).

Re: Scheduling A C Section Just Because You Want Your Doctor To Do It
I would schedule it. I had an emergency c-section. The doc on call was affiliated with my OB practice and she determined that a c-section was best for me and was going to do it. She called into my OB who had just gotten to his home after vacation (and was technically still on vacation) and he concurred. I was all set to have another doctor do it even though I really wanted my own. Just about 10 minutes before the section, my OB flew in the door like Superman and BOTH doctors did the surgery. I felt much better even though the other doctor ultimately made the decision and was certainly qualified to do it on her own. Next time around, I will schedule it. NO VBAC for me.

I guess another question to throw out there is do you see scheduling a C for no real reason a week before your due date wrong from the baby's standpoint?
I know it's up to me to decide I'm just curious what you all think.

I would definately have another dicussion with your doc then, and tell her you want to try the VBAC. There may be a specific reason why you wouldn't be able to (scaring, etc). If there is no medical reason, than see how the pregnancy goes and do what you think is best.

I had a c-section with my first and when I get pregnant again I will absolutely be having a c-section with my second. I'm too scared to try for a VBAC.

No, I do not think it is wrong - at least not the 2nd time around after you have already had one. A week early is standard, because they don't want you going into labor.
ETA - I *think* there are risks with a VBAC (as there are with anything). Have a serious talk with your doc and lay it all out there

Re: Scheduling A C Section Just Because You Want Your Doctor To Do It
There might be a reason why you are not a candidate for VBAC. I would talk to your Dr. again. Most c-sections are scheduled the week before your due date. At that point your baby is full term so it doesn't matter with the baby by then.
I have to have another c-section and was told that I might not be able to have anymore children after this. It depends on how this c-section goes if I can have a 3rd.
I had no idea that having c-section after c-section could be a big problem. I am pretty upset about this.
This is a big reason why if I could have I would have tried everything and anything I could to have gone vaginally.

Re: Scheduling A C Section Just Because You Want Your Doctor To Do It
A scarred uterus (previous c/section) is a medical reason to have a schedule c/section. Of course if you're looking to have a large family, cesearen delivery is not the favorable way out.

Oh my goodness. I never knew that by having c section after c section could lead to the possibility of not being able to have any more kids. I will mention this to Dr.
Also I don't know if my uterus is that scarred. I would have to check that out if I can with the doctor and see if that is a reason to have a C.
I do know people that have had c sections with their first and went naturally with # 2. If I plan it I will never know if I could have gone naturally.
My doctor didn't mention anything at my first prenatal appointment that I medically need to get a C. She just said if you want me to do it than schedule it. I just kind of felt like ok...we're talking about this now and I'm only 8 weeks??? I have to be honest I was taken back that she is already assuming that this will need to be a C.
I'm all for C's when it's medically necessary and if I need one for the 2nd I would love for her to do it. But, I also want to have the opportunity to go naturally if I could. I have an appt with my dr this week I will talk to her more about this.

Same here. The risks of a VBAC are too high for me. I had a great c-section with a great recovery and I will do it again without a second thought. To me, giving birth is the arrival of a precious baby - it doesn't matter to me how he/she arrives as long it is safely.
i'm not surprised your doc has already mentioned another c/s - it is very common to automatically schedule one after you have the first

I scheduled my 2nd induction because my office merged with another for deliveries and I didn't want to take the chance of getting a stranger. You have to do what you feel comfortable with

Re: Scheduling A C Section Just Because You Want Your Doctor To Do It
Sound slike your doctor doesn't want to consider the vbac option. Not all OB's are willing to do it. Luckily mine was.
I had a c/s for my first and there was no medical reason I had to have a c/s when my second came around. So my doctor said we would schedule the repeat c/s as a back-up - - one week AFTER my due date. That way I could try for the vbac option. My OB didn't want to wait too long, plus I was monitored very carefully for the size of the baby since my first was 9lbs 7oz when he came 3 weeks early (though not the reason for my first c/s - he was breech).
Had any condition not been favorable, I would have done the repeat c/s, but when I went into labor 10 days before my due date, I was able to vbac with no issues (and there are risks, but they are no higher than having a major surgery like a c/s). FM if you have any questions.

Re: Scheduling A C Section Just Because You Want Your Doctor To Do It
I scheduled my C-Section a week before my due date for the same reason you just mentioned. My dr. was going on vacation the next day and it would be the other dr. on call who would have to perform it if I chose a later date.
That being said, it was only because I NEEDED a C-section. DS was breach, so I wanted to make sure it was MY dr who performed the surgery.
However, this early on in your pregnancy I think if you want to explore the option of a VBAC, you should definitely discuss it with your dr. If she is against VBAC and it is something you want to try, then maybe find a new dr. As the PP said, not all doctors are willing to try VBAC.
My dr. told me if I had a second child, she would prefer another scheduled C-section, but would also be okay if I wanted to try a VBAC.
At this point, your dr. is not making the call on medical necessity, but on what she prefers. If you feel like you want to be better informed before you make a decision, definitely talk to her.
But on the other hand, if you, like the other ladies here, already know you would like to have a 2nd C-Section, then by all means, schedule it early with the doctor you want performing it.
