scoliosis and epidurals

So i heard from another PG lady that she was unable to get an epidural bc the anesthesiologist said that the scoliosis was in the way. So i freaked as i have scoliosis. I asked the Doctor about it today. He stated that it can cause problems but in most cases you are still able to get it. He said people that actually had to get the surgery and have the bars put in there back might have more trouble. But anyway he gave me the name to the head of the anesthesiology department at Winthrop and told me to speak with him and ask my questions.

Anyone else have thoughts?? or experience with this??

Re: scoliosis and epidurals

i was worried about this too. i made the dr come and take a look before i even needed the epi and he said he didnt think there would be a problem but i was still scared about it. he was right, i had no problems at all. but i guess it could depending on how bad ur scoliosis is, mine isnt bad.

Re: scoliosis and epidurals

I had the surgery when I was 12- I have metal rods along my spine between my thoracic vertebrae ( # 4-10 possibly)

My ob said it should be find since its not my lower back
My friend who had most of her spine surgically fixed won't be able to get a epidural- I feel for her.

I have rods in my back from scoliosis and still have a slight curve at my lower back. My ortho wrote down after looking at my x-rays where he had to place the anesthesia.

I had a c-section and a spinal. Everything worked out great. I could have never gone full term and pushed with my condition so this was all done ahead of time.Chat Icon

Re: scoliosis and epidurals

DH's cousins has scoliosis and was not able to get an epidural for either of her deliveries. They tried both times but could never get it to work properly...either one side of the other would go numb, but not both. It is different for everyone though.

I had surgery for scoliosis when I was 18. I was fused and have bars in both thoracic and lumber (I think from T4 to L3, so way down) I had an appointment with my surgeon to discuss this early on in my pregnancy. He said they should absolutely be able to give me an epidural if needed (I'm trying to go without unless I need a c-section). He said sometimes anesthesiologists are more nervous and will refuse just because it is more difficult, but it is definitely possible and suggested talking to the anesthesiologist beforehand. He also wrote a letter to my OB to say I can have an epi and that my back wouldn't present problems for a normal vaginal birth. I think if the anesthesiologist is experienced, it should be ok, but I'm still worried that he/she will have trouble if I need one.

This excatly what happened to me with DS. I ended up having to get a c-section though. They said the trama from vaginal birth would be too great on my back. A vaginal birth wasn't even an option. But I had a spinal and they def numbed be very well. I think they used more then they usually would because I was numb for at least 5 hours from the chest down.

I actually found out I had scoliosis when I was getting my epi.

The anesth. stopped and told me it may not be a wise decision. I was in SO MUCH pain that I didnt even care. He told me the warnings of it and said I may have severe residual pain. I didnt care and thank god I didnt. I have to talk to my doctor before having another child though.

Re: scoliosis and epidurals

bump please for c-section deliveries what kind of shot were you given for delivery pain that was safe?
i was told either no epi vaginal delivery or a spinal (demerol) for c-section pain.
