semen analysis report
now i am at my wits end... we met w/ a fertility dr where he said my hubbys seman analysis was fine (since he is pushing to do insemination) I always get copies of results sent to me.. now when i just read the S analysis report it said, too many wbc and should be treated (i guess with antibiotics) then retested. i am concerned that my dr sorta disregarded that and wanted to go directly to IUI. its hard to ignore the report and just do IUI when a simple dose of antibiotics can do the trick... what should i do now????? should i trust dr (and get it outta my head that he just wants to do a treatment which is more profitable) or should i explore this SA report? and can his primary help us w/ this or will he send him to a urologist.. if u guys have any experience w/ this please help.. thank you

Re: semen analysis report
First-if your DH has a high WBC count that means he has an infection. If your Dr wants to bypass yoru protective cervical mucous and inseminate you with infected sperm I have a real issue with that. He should be on a course of antibiotics before you TTC again because anything he has he will be passing on to you

1st of all - thank your for your response ( i was hoping you would reply, u r always so helpful)
my husband got his sperm tested a year ago w/ our gyno then this fertility dr wanted to retest it... i asked him if semen was fine, and he said yes,,,,, (i said well remeber wbc were alittle high back in the day, he said yes everything is still the same but it won't effect fertility) so then when i got the report in mail today, the report said high wbc, patient should be treated then re-tested.... do i ignore this? or listen to dr or be a hard a$ss and call him and tell him to please explain it to me? he already got ****** at me b.c i told him i wanted to try clomid 1st and he says he doesnt treat pateints w/ just clomid, need to do clomid and IUI. i am reluctant. and really getting upset..

I'm not sure who your RE is, but I would seriously be considering another opinion.

Re: semen analysis report
When they do an IUI isn't the sperm is washed which takes care of any infections in the seamen.. I don't think the sperm has the infection it is the seamen that does.. I may be completely wrong but this is how it was explained to me once.
I would ask the Dr.

oh yea, forgot about that but... maybe i wont need IUI if the infection is killed..... isnt that a possibility? and shouldnt i at least have been informed of exactrly what the report said?

Re: semen analysis report
You should be getting copies of all testing that was done. Some may be redone like CD 3 testing because that can change. Other than that I don't see what else youw ould have to do. I am not familiar with IUI at all but i am familiar with infections and I would not receommend trying to inseminate if your DH has one. It may not affect the sperm and the egg but what about the uterine environment?

When an IUI is done they take the sperm out of the seamen (this is called washing).. so there would be no infection placed back into the uterus. Again I am no Dr.. and you should call you Dr and ask.

Right, this is what happens when doing an IUI. However, with that said, when we did our initial testing with the RE I came back testing positive for ureaplasma (bacterial infection on the cervix). Not only did I have to take antibotics for 10 days, but so did DH just in case I had passed it onto him. My RE would NOT do any procedures until we had both finished the antibotics and I was clear of the infection.
IMO why take the risk?

Re: semen analysis report
Here I found this:
Sperm washing is a procedure long used to help couples trying to conceive without passing on diseases or genes for disease. Sperm are separated from the surrounding seminal fluid by a centrifuge, a device that separates components of a liquid as it spins at high speed. The sperm are then washed twice in a solution, in an effort to remove the undesirable materials.

Re: semen analysis report
yes i so get all copies of tests! I am good like that. i am not even worried aabout iui right now, b/c if the infection can hurt the sperms fertility, then i want that fixed b4 ANY treatment in even considered. then maybe treatment isnt nec.

Re: semen analysis report
OK before you go changing doctors, let me tell you my experience. DH had his s/a in Aug which came back with elevated WBC's as well as some other issues. So he saw a urologist who put him on a course of antibiotics and had hime repeat the s/a 6-8 weeks later (you NEED to have another one for comparision, this is a big deal since s/a's can change dramatically from one day to the next). On his next one the WBC's was actually a little higher then the last and overall the whole sample was worse, showing the antibiotics had no effect whatsoever on the s/a. Upon further reading and research I discovered that sometimes there are WBC's in a s/a due to inflammation which they bascially can not treat and then they know the WBC's that they are seeing are not from an infection. We did end up doing IUI but for us it was pointless because DH's counts were so low. Anyway, if you are concerned, I would see a urologist who specializes in fertiltiy before changing RE's. I'm sure you could call your RE and ask for a referral because you wanted to discuss the s/a with them- I don't think the RE would have a problem with that. Hope this helped! I too was concerned about the WBC's at first, but now it doesn't seem to be an issue at all and we are going for IVF. HTH

thank you so much! and mucho baby dust and best wishes w/ your IVF. You gave me some really awesome advice, what bothers me is that my dr said this shouldnt effect our fertility, when i see in plain b&W the S/A report said WBC should be treated then rechecked.... it just really confused me,,, maybe there needs to be a certain percent of WBC to be a prob w/ fertility. I dont know , but i just read what the report said..... thanks again! and good luck to u.

Re: semen analysis report
ok - - so i finally spoke to my drs receptionist and she said they dr said his interpretation on the analysis was fine. the lap report spelled out that the WBC should be treated (antibiotics) then retested. I asked him to please explain why there are such different interpretations and the answer i received is The semen analysis is normal.....(like leave us alone) did anyone ever encounter this (where the report says one thing) and the dr says another? (w/no explanation) i am sure it is fine for insemination b/c the sperm is washed but if an antibiotic is given to treat whatever infectrion he may have then dont u think IUI may not be nec? anyone encounter this kinda thing?

Re: semen analysis report
I dont think I understand the question. Is it that you dont want to do IUI? Nothing says you have to do it. But you're making the assumption that your IF issues have to do with an infection. It may not.
