Semen Analysis Results for my DH.
I was hoping to get a little help being that is a Saturday and we got the results today with no doctors available to phone.
We kind of did things a little backward. We got the script for the SA from Dh's general doctor. So we picked up the results today.. I think they might be preliminary because there are little check boxes about interpretation being fowarded later and stuff. Of course.. none of the boxes are checked but the lab did say the doctor hadn't been in all week to look at results and they weren't sure if what they were sending to DH's doctor was prelim or final results...
Anyway.. on with the results... His results are first and the normals for the lab are in ( ). Volume: 2.0 ml (>20mil) Sperm Count 143 Million (that is good!right?) (>20 million) Round cell count: rare (<5 million) Motility 27% (>50%) Motility rating: 1+ on a scale of 0-4. It said "Poor tailbeat, little foward progression" (normal 2 or above) ph 7.4 (normal 7.7-8.0) Viscosity: Normal Color: Yellow (White/ yellow) Liquification: <60 min (<60 min) Vitality: 66% of non-motile cells are viable. (normal >75% :indicated if motility is <30%) Morphology Normal Oval: 51% (normal >30%) Amorphous: 16% Small head: 14% Tapered: 19% (The rest of the morphology fields were blank) Then there was a box that says "other tests and observations" and in bold it says "Normal =positve (indicated in Azoospermia)" I have no idea what that means..
So we have been trying for 9 months and had a m/c on October 1st. I am hopeful because the sperm count seems to be on the high end but the motility stuff seems a little scary.
I know you ladies are so informed and I would love to hear your take on this. Also where do we go from here? Do I call my gyn (who I hate and really want to get a new one) or do we go to a different kind of doctor since right now we might have a MI problem? What kind of doctor would that be?
TIA for your advice and wisdom
ETA: Also is there anything that can be done for motility issues. I read somewhere zinc. Should we just try that for a few months and then contact a fertility doctor?

It seems your only problem would be motility. IUI would be a good option for you because it selects the best sperm and then puts them close to the target. The count is nice and high, so you would probably have good results from a wash.

I am not an expert but from what I can tell of the SA results, the only concerning number is the motility. I believe that at least 50% motility is considered normal range. You may want to try some natural remedies or head to a RE. Usually a SA is repeated to see if the numbers change. Worst case scenario, IUI might help you get pg more quickly.

Re: Semen Analysis Results for my DH.
Keep in mind that normal can range from lab to lab. Check to see what the lab that did the analysis considers normal.
According to NYU, they consider normal to be:
Volume > or equal to 2.0cc (this would put your DH's volume at the bottom end of normal) Appearance- greyish-white/opalescent Viscosity- 1 PH- > or equal to 7.2 Count- 20,000,000 Motility > or equal to 50% Total sperm count > or equal to 40 million Forward progression > or equal to 3 Agglutination- none % vitality- > 75% (only applicable if motility is <50%) Morphology- > 14% with normal oval heads

You are right. I will add the labs normal values as a point of reference. Thanks!

Stupid question- are you sure his sperm count was 143 million and not 14.3 million? 143 million seems really high.

I have heard of a natural vitamin supplement called ProXeed. Some studies have shown that a strong caffeine drink before BD can improve motility. Click the link below for more information.

From a website
Clear your mind, clear the air Avoid chemical exposures, smoke, and recreational drugs to maintain healthy sperm and semen Keep your cool Prevent testes from overheating by wearing looser underwear and limiting soaking time in spas and hot baths Curb alcohol Avoid excessive drinking to keep sperm count high Get extra antioxidants Take a daily nutritional supplement containing 1,000 mg of vitamin C, 400 IU of vitamin E, and 200 mcg of selenium to reduce oxidative stresses that damage sperm Think zinc Improve sperm quality by taking 60 mg of this essential mineral every day, along with 1 to 2 mg per day of copper, for three months Add L-carnitine to your daily routine Taking 3 grams a day of this supplement may improve sperm motility These recommendations are not comprehensive and are not intended to replace the advice of your doctor or pharmacist. Could definitely be 143 million. DH had 220 million at his SA

Nope it says 143 million. I saw somewhere that normal is 20 mil to 150 mil. It was a faxed copy but I looked at the spacing and stuff and I don't think a decimil point could be missing.

Re: Semen Analysis Results for my DH.
DH had soem improvement using fertility blend for men. I would contact an RE about doing IUI and see what the washed count is. And/or have DH see a urologist who specializes in infertility. Good luck

Re: Semen Analysis Results for my DH.
Our urologist recomended specific vitamins and for how long and how much for DH to improve his issues and it all improved except his morp which was the biggest issue anyway.
IMO -that motility is FINE. The averages are very very rarely met , and with a Count that high that motility is good.
They worry more about morp and motility when you have a sample of less then 5 mil....Your DH is way above that.
a urologist consult or an RE will tell you all this as well.
I would say the sample was very good, if not perfectly normal.
eta- I looke dup some of DH's SA's from all our IUIS and his motility ( at NSUH) was 1 + to 2 MAX and was above the cut off even at his lowest of 1.4 ...thats according to NSUH.
