No. They're disgusting. Especially when grown adults do them on purpose.
That is one surefire way to make me have less respect for you. Sorry, JMO. There's a time and a place, and it's in the bathroom.
I understand not being a fan of farting in front of people but a loss of respect for a bodily function? That seems a bit extreme. I don't walk around crop dusting and I don't like it if someone stinks up my cubicle, but it is a normal function of the body. Would you lose respect for someone if their stomach rumbled when they were hungry? That is a bodily function too.

I don't either, but it's much to my husbands dismay. He would LOVE for me to do so. Now that I'm pregnant, I just can't help it though sometimes, and he always makes a point especially at night in bed to say "niiiiiiiiiiice" but then again, this is a man who will pull his own finger!
OMG...both my DH & I are reading this together in hysterics!
The funny thing is, I can't help but just laugh about it!

She said when grown adults do it on purpose -- I'd assume this means doing it because they think it's funny or doing it as a joke... not doing it because they need to perform that particular bodily function.

Yes, I read that. But I still don't get it as a "loss of respect". I was curious why it was such a big deal.

Exactly what Kara said. I think it's disgusting when grown adults feel it's necessary or even acceptable to let one loose in public, especially when it's on purpose.
And no, you will not explode if you don't fart at that moment. I can vouch for this. I have held them in thousands of times in my life and I am still here. Why hold them in? Because it's disgusting to do it in a place where there are other people.
And as far as it being an "uncontrollable" bodily function likened to your stomach rumbling when you're hungry...there's no comparison. You can absolutely control when and where you let one loose, unless you have some physical disorder. Would you take a dump on the floor in a department store? Probably not...because you can control when and where you do that. It's the same thing with farting.

I can't believe people don't fart in front of their spouses
Depending on the situation farts can be funny
I NEVER do in front of my DH. He gets absolutely disgusted and thinks it's not "ladylike" Of course now and then you can't help it..but he does it whenever he wants in front of me!

Yea, exactly IF he does catch me he thinks it's funny because it's embarrassing but - he just thinks in general I shouldn't do it But he loves to catch me sometimes.

Re: Seriously, are farts funny?
DH always says I will "like" a movie until someone farts. Then I LOOOVE the movie and think its the funniest ever. He is so right!!!
Case in point - Master of Disguises, a stupid Dana Carvey movie. Until farting gets brought into it. Then I start crying...

Re: Seriously, are farts funny?
LOL. DH and I are pretty open with eachother, and will fart in front of eachother.
I have Crohn's disease, and if I take my meds on time and eat conservatively I'm usually OK, but if I eat something more risky or am late with my pills or drink something carbonated.... well...
I'm only open about it if I'm just with DH, I would never willingly fart in public or in front of guests if it's in my control.
DH and I do joke about it though... the morning after we had breakfast in bed on our honeymoon something didn't agree with his stomach and he let out the most potent one either one of us has ever smelled... we both went running and hid in the bathroom.
"Breakfast" is now our slang word for it... and we try to watch out for the ultimate disaster and will joke about it ("breakfast in bed")
I think that like anything else, as long as you and DH are on the same page and are happy, who is to judge what you do?

As a gastric bypass patient, I have had to "let one loose" at inopportune moments. Some have been silent but deadly and others have rivaled the horn section of the NY Philharmonic. It can be rather painful to the point where I am brought to tears. Perhaps THOSE farts are NOT funny. All others are indeed good for a chuckle. I'll stand by that statement.

I did this to my DH first. I think I first farted in front of him after 2 weeks of dating. I just couldn't hold it anymore and I couldn't run to the bathroom anymore.

What are you serious? I just can't believe it It's a function. It happens
We have never done it in front of each other either. I like to maintain some level of feminine mystery so I keep many things private. And he just never did in front of me either.
But I came from a family where no one ever did that in front of each other. . . so I guess he realized that and decided not to!
Ok.. We have been together 14 years I think we didn't do that like the first 2 years but after that we were like ahhh f it
almost 11 years and still going strong and fart free - how about that for a t shirt??

OMG, I did that once last year!!! I had really bad gas and let go a silent but deadly one and walked on to another part of the room. About 6 seconds later, I hear, "JAMES!! EWWWWW!"

The first time I ever farted in front of DH was a total accident (I was laughing really hard) and the night we got engaged I tried to blame HIM I was like that was you!! He kept saying I can't believe it now we are engaged and it's all over
