Shake A Paw - Lynbrook - Selling Mill Dogs

This past Monday I received an email from an individual informing me she puchased a 3 month old puppy from Shake A Paw in Lynbrook. The individual repeatedly asked if the puppy was from a private breeder or mill and she was assured the puppy came from a "breeder" in Arkansas. The puppy vomited on the trip home. The following morning I was informed the puppy was vomiting and bleeding. I aked the purchaser if the puppy was microchipped and it was. I traced the chip to a kennel in Arkansas. The purchaser returned to the store with the puppy which was then violently ill. After a heated argument, threats to call the media, the store manager took back the puppy and returned the sum of $1,690 to the purchaser.

Her statement to me: "But they told me it came from a breeder". Of course the purchaser is not going to be told the truth. Sadly, many of these animals do not survive. Many purchasers opt to keep the animal and spend thousands on vet bills, not to mention the emotional heartache and it does not always have a happy ending.

Of course I am going to say NEVER purchase from a pet store. If however, you do, and I hope you do not, get as much information as possible before the purchase. It is your right to know where the animal is orginating from. It is very easy to trace the origination once you have the information. If you do not know how to go about doing so, reach out to a rescue organization. They will help you.

Our organization is moving forward with an inquiry and asking for an investigation of this business.

Re: Shake A Paw - Lynbrook - Selling Mill Dogs

For more information on Shake A Paw go to the web engine and search name. There are several sites with many complaints lodged against Shake a Paw. Sadly they are one of thousands that prey on the emotions of people at the expense of innocent lives. They are predators that take advantage of human emotion, it is merely about the $$$$$, nothing more, nothing less. Also, the vets that purchasers are referred to for "free" checkups (let's be realistic, nothing is free - it is merely incoroporated into the bill) are sometimes silent partners, and if not, are sleeping in the same bed.

It is not an official state link. I am going to inquire with NY State Attorney General and Better Business Bureau as well.

It is sad to read the stories of what these poor animals went through and the heartbreak the owners were put through, it is inexcusable.

It's just so despicable what this pet store has done.

Hopefully this information will continue to circulate and people will see what this pet shop and it's puppies are all about.

Shameful. Chat Icon

Re: Shake A Paw - Lynbrook - Selling Mill Dogs

With the most recent incident the puppy was gravely ill, more than likely parvo. It is my hope it received medical treatment immediately, as every minute counts. There is also the risk others were exposed or the puppy was exposed from another sickly puppy. The bottom line, these scenarios are an everyday occurence. Until the day comes when people will no longer support mills via purchases from pet stores this will continue. Organizations such as HSUS and the ASPCA are working towards putting an end to puppy mills, although it is an uphill battle, I do believe it will come to be one day.

I'm guessing if the puppy is too sick for treatment, the only humane thing to do would be to put he/she down.

They're not going to make the puppy suffer any more than it has to. Chat Icon

Re: Shake A Paw - Lynbrook - Selling Mill Dogs

Just a question-not sure if you know - has anyone attempted to create a class-action lawsuit? I know that for an attorney this may not be a profitable case to take on, but it could be historic.....

Re: Shake A Paw - Lynbrook - Selling Mill Dogs

Shake-A-Paw is TERRIBLE! We got Cooper there 3 years ago (not knowing what puppy mills were or that they even exsisted)... We were assured that he was from a very reputable breeder and he was given a clean bill of health. The very next day we were rushing (thru a snow storm mind you) to the vet because Coop's breating was very labored and he was super lathargic. We were told he had pnemonia and kennel cough. SAP covered that first vet bill and that was it. After weekly visits with numourous other sicknesses, SAP refused any more compensation and suggested that we bring Cooper back in exchange for a refund... WHAT?!?!

We were LIVID. We filed a complaint with the State Attorney General's office and also became aware of an organization who is doing the same thing as you in trying to bring down this chain (CAPS). To date, they have helped bring down several SAP locations in NY and NJ.

For months after we got Cooper when we would bring him places we would get into conversations about him, mostly where we got him. When we told people SAP they gasped and would tell us that they got a dog there too and experienced similar health problems that we did... however some of them would bring they're new dogs home only to have them die days later Chat Icon.

I wish you the best of luck in bringing this $hithole down!!!

I wish I could remember, FH took care of that. Most likely it was though.

I will contact AG in Mineola. No doubt SAP has complaints against them in other jurisdictions. CAP is a great organization

Re: class action, going to look into it.

Thanks. It is frustrating b/c I am beginning to feel that the only way to get grand-scale change is if the whole chain suffers...then more chains can start to see the public's repugnance for the practice.

Since the lawmakers are not feeling enough pressure, maybe it is time that the money talks .....

I think this is a brilliant idea. If there is anything I can do to help, please let me know.

As for the media coverage, definitely keep us posted!!
