Shake a Paw
Went there today to get my kitty the Wellness food. I went in to look at the dogs..
well, some were just adorable and I wanted to take them all home.
Some were way too young to be there..they were weaned way too fast. Most of the smaller puppies just layed there..it was awful. The place smelled and some animals were just unhappy. Some of the puppies couldn't be more than 4 weeks old! They looked like they were just born!
I would never get a dog there but I was just there to get the food. I told DH it was awful, even though my heart was breaking wanting to take each one home with me.

Re: Shake a Paw
Please do NOT support pet stores that sell puppies, dogs or cats. The dogs come from puppy mills, no matter what they tell you. Take your business elsewhere - PetCo, PetsMart, or another pet supply store that does not participate in this barbaric business.
Shake-a-Paw is one of the WORST offenders.
If you do ever return, tell them you will no longer purchase anything there as long as they continue to support puppy mills.

Re: Shake a Paw
I was trying to get the food without doing it online. Not a lot of retailers carry it.
I don't want to support them after what I saw.
It's a shame..those poor dogs.

Re: Shake a Paw
I have a friend who is a breeder and always says that Shake-a-Paw is horrendous. They get their animals from overseas as young as 4 weeks old so they have a longer "shelf life" and they have more time to sell them. Its soooo sad

Re: Shake a Paw
you will be happy to know that I called the NCSPCA and spoke to a very nice guy who said I was the second complaint about them.
Poor puppies were just to young to be there.

Re: Shake a Paw
I bought one of my pugs from there. It was the last time I stepped foot in that place. I never once had a problem with my other pug, but the day I brought her home she has been one problem after another problem. First she had hip dsyplasia at 7 months old, she had to have surgery for. When I called Shake a Paw they told me to bring her back and get another dog for the same value. I told them to forget about it, how the hell did they expect me to do that. Then they would probably kill her or something. So we just paid all the medical bills! I wouldn't trade her in for anything in the world, but I would never recommend buying a pet from that store and she was definitely taking away from her parents too young. She has very bad separation anxiety. It's really a shame what they do to those poor animals. I wish that place would close down already.

Re: Shake a Paw
I'm not giving up on this and I'm not going away..
they took my number and I hope to hear back. I'll let you know.
So sorry your doggie has such issues.
There were a few doggies there that were old enough and some were all happy and jumping around but the vast majority of them just layed there..seemed bad.
and they don't walk the dogs!

Thank you for acting. The more complaints that are filed the more likely we are to get them closed.

I work with someone who's sister got a lab from them. The dog had to be rushed to the emergency vet THAT night. He was put on a nebulizer and it cost thousands of dollars!

Re: Shake a Paw
Someone I know works there and he tried to tell me that the place was legit. I think he was just bs'ing me. I've looked at the BBB and tons of dogs have gotten sick and died after being bought from there. disgusting. if you need to buy a dog, then buy it from a real breeder, never support pet stores.. EVER

Me too. I had no idea this went on when I purchased my dog. Dh and I just happened to be in Hicksville one day. We went inside and I fell in love with my puppy. We had so many problems with him when we first got. He spent weeks at the vet, I did not think he was going to make it. Now he's fine, and I can't picture our lives w/out him. Breaks my heart to see how they treat them. I'd never go back there again

Re: Shake a Paw
That's where Cooper came from. They're horrible! I wouldn't step foot in that store even if my life depended on it!
Do all of the puppies in that store a favor and try getting your furbabies food elsewhere. They don't deserve your business.
ETA: I just read thru all of the posts... to you for being pro-active and making a phone call! Please keep us posted if anything comes of it!

Re: Shake a Paw
I bought my parents a golden retriever from the one in Hicksville and he is the best. We have not had one single problem with him. When we took him for his first appt. at the vet the vet said he was the best looking golden retriever he had seen in a long time. I had nothing but a great experience with them. I don't know if it is the same store we are talking about but the people in the Hicksville store really seem to care genuinely for the dogs and cats and the guy we dealt w/ was so informative and nice.

You got lucky.
Unfortunately, ALL pet stores get their pups from puppy mills because legit breeder will NEVER sell their pups to them.
The reason for this is that breeders want to know who is getting their pups. They want to be in touch with the pups new owners and want the new owners to know they can be in touch with them when a situation arises and advice is needed.
Additionally, if a breeder doesn't think the perspective owner will be a good fit for their dog, they will not, under any circumstance sell the dog to that person.
Not supporting pet stores that sell puppies goes beyond whether or not you (the general "you") got a healthy puppy. Not purchasing a pup from a pet store is directly helping shut down puppy mills. It's supply and demand - if there's no demand for pups from a pet store there's no need for the supply. If there's no need for the supply, the puppy mills close down.

I know this place; they're lying. They get their pups from puppy mills. There was a protest there recently.

I was going to respond that I highly doubt that they get the dogs from breeders. I wish we had a breeder who could come "on" to the board and give a q&a session about why they would never sell their puppies at a pet store.

That would be SO good!!! Then we could pin that topic to the top of the board.
I wonder how we could work something like this out?
