She's Puking (again)....longish' but HELP!! updated top of page 2 - noticing a pattern??
long story short -
yesterday - 7:00 AM feeding - vomits - not a massive amount but a bit more than the normal spit up.
11:00'ish feeding - vomits up EVERY ounce. I know the spoon thing (see how much a spoonful is and it's not that much) - this was a LOT - i'm serious....3 or 4 times - HUGE mouthfuls - gushing/spouting out of her mouth.
1:30'ish feeding - same thing - her onesie, carseat, everything SOAKED....vomited 3-4 times total - EVERY ounce gone.
Call the doc (we're with a family practice doc - not a pediatrician) - he says she may have something wrong with some sphinxter or something - to take her to the ER for x-rays if the next feeding she does the same thing.
Next feeding - she keeps down - minimal spit up.
All feedings last night - NO PROBLEM. She was fine - ate a LOT to be honest.....at one point - almost 6 ounces - like she was making up for lost food.
5:00 AM feeding - she JUST vomited up EVERYTHING i fed her (almost 4 ounces).
here's the thing - she's FINE otherwise - perfectly happy....no crying, no wretching or screaming - she literally just opens her mouth and SPEWS and then almost smiles - it's SILENT.
Yesterday - she fell asleep right after each time - this time - she stayed awake for a short while - playing with me while i rocked her and now she's asleep in her swing...
facts -
we are: using soy formula, i am keeping her upright for 20 or so minutes after eating (except to change her diaper), i burp her after almost every ounce now to prevent gas build up and we're using playtex ventaire bottles...
also - she kinda sounds congested before it happens - if that makes any sense...not like she's struggling to breathe (though that HAS happened - that sound) - but like she's just congested and going to cough but it's NO cough....
what on earth can i do???? do you have any thoughts? could this still be a reflux issue? she's not in pain....like i said - it's SILENT...just open mouth and vom... my poor bunny girl...i feel so terrible....

If it were me, I would get whatever test/xray that they recommended. I would take her to a radiology place with a script rather than the ER where it is loaded with germs.

I agree. My 2nd DD did the same thing...projectile vomiting all day... We went to St. Catherines so a pediatric specializing radiologist could do the sono of her abdomen. We ultimately had an upper GI series as well with another wonderful peds. radiologist at Good Sam. Hers was not pyloric stenosis or any other abnormality, but a severe milk and soy allergy and silent reflux. I would ask to see a pediatric GI as well.

have you seen a pediatric GI yet? sounds like the next step. DD is a puker too... had reflux (and colic) and was always throwing up, in waves across the span of 1 1/2 hours after each feeding. During her first year, she got two stomach viruses which had crazy puking too. Never needed an antibiotic though!

Re: She's Puking (again)....longish' but HELP!!
is there a reason why she needs to be on soy? my ds couldnt take the dairy so we have him on similac sensitive(lactose free), but with his spitting up we just changed it to sensitive r.s. which is rice starch added to help keep it down... its made alot of improvement

Re: She's Puking (again)....longish' but HELP!!
I would take her to a pediatric GI and see what they say.
Another thing is that often times kids with dairy allergies also have soy allergies. It sounds to me like the soy isn't working for her or she has reflux.

Re: She's Puking (again)....longish' but HELP!!
i called a specialist just now and they're closed for the holiday....naturally.
i'm searching out some more specialists - but they will likely be closed for the holiday as well....
the doc said we should keep her on the soy (at her appointment tuesday) because she was doing SO well on it.
if she has a soy allergy - wouldn't she be puking EVERY time she ate - not just 'sometimes'???
eta: put her on the soy because she was spitting up and having HORRIBLE gas and constipation with the Similac Early Shield.
I do have some powder Enfamil - should we try that???

If you are concerned, call the pediatrician. Don't wait for Monday, because you'll be stressed all weekend worrying...and trust me, I've been there, its not fun.

Re: She's Puking (again)....longish' but HELP!!
this sounds ALOT like what my DD was like, I remember typing posts out like this myself. It may be something, but like my DD it may be nothing more then she spits up ALOT. I used to go through clothes, bibs, blankets it was never ending, at times i didnt think i could handle it anymore. If it isnt anything medically wrong, unfortunalty its just something you are going to have to make it through, its very hard on your emotions though, just when you think shes doing ok shell spit up again. It got better for my DD around 8 months old i think...completely stopped at 11 months. My mom said i was the exact same way so i guess she got it from me.
My DD was on soy as well, with reg. formula she was projectile
just wanted to add a bunch of because i know how stressed out cleaning up puke all the time can make you feel!

If this is an abdominal sonogram that they want you to have, be careful with the radiology places...not all places do this test, and not all doctors can do it. I wanted a specific doctor that specialized in newborns, since my uncle in a radiologist and knew of one. Be sure you explain to the office people that its for a newborn...I actually had it done in the hospital.

Re: She's Puking (again)....longish' but HELP!!
Hey Jess my DD had the same thing and we attributed it all to reflux. Some days are better than others but sometimes she spits it all up like a water fountatin. We found that the soy worked but the Similac R.S. or Enfamil A.R. both have rice starch to help them keep it down worked much better. Good Luck

Re: She's Puking (again)....longish' but HELP!!
Hey jess... Madison had the same thing when she was about Emma's age...
She was still having pumped breast milk at that time, and I thought it was something I was eating. My ped told me if it was reflux she would be extremely fussy, arching her back, etc.... He said it was totally normal, and that we think they are spitting up more than they really are... and trust me.. i thought he was crazy. I thought I could put it all back into a 4 ounce bottle!!!
One thing he did say was to do the things you are already doing... burping every ounce, keeping her upright for 20 minutes (he said like in a rocker, not the angle in a carseat) and it got a lot better as she got bigger.... He also said that she was not really ready for 4 ounces, and she was spitting up the excess her belly couldnt hold.. but I continued to give her 4 ounces because thats what she wanted and could eat... It got MUCH better with time.. she still spits up occassionally, but nothing like it was.... I felt better at the drs when we knew she was gaining weight and still having wet and poopy diapers..
I hope it gets better!! Buy stock in onesies and burp cloths!!! Thats what we did!!!!
eta to include: she also sounded congested when this happened to her.... like you could hear all the mucus when she breathed.. it was worse in the morning....

DS was like this. He would sometimes spit up what looked like EVERYTHING he just ate, and sometimes just a little bit, and sometimes nothing. He was just a happy spitter, there was nothingmedically wrong with him.

No actually- it comes and goes. Allergies are an immune reaction so depends on how strong that is. Many babies who have a milk allergy also have a soy allergy. I think something like 50%. I would aks your Dr for a scrip for Nutamigen AA, Elecare, or Neocate.

Re: She's Puking (again)....longish' but HELP!!
the rest of the day - she has been fine. She didn't puke up anything else....and i called and left a few mesages for some Pediatric GI's...so we'll see who calls back Monday....
she didn't sleep a whole lot today - not sure what was up....and wow - at one point - she at 7 ounces...and since then has been eating 1 ounce at a time and then falling asleep....
i'm thinking possible growth spurt - or because she puked up her 'morning' meal - she was making up for it...not sure.
today was her one month birthday....i'll post pics in the AM....i just felt so bad that it started off with puke...

This is true. I know you arent in NY, but my DS had an upper GI and I had it done at the hospital too. GI doc gave me a script and I went to the hospital to do the procedure. They ahve pediatric radiologist right there. Lucky my DS was fine. My DS spits up a lot too. Some days are worse than others, but they are not concerned since he is gaining weight. We just have a lot of burp cloths and lots of launddry for both me and my DS. I would consider getting a script and doing the procedure at the hospital instead of a radiology place.

Jess, the same thing happened with DS. He would projectile vomit across the room, but never be in pain. We switched him to sensitive formula for that purpose. He still did it occasionally, but eventually he grew out of it and barely spits up alot.
I agree with your doc. about the sphincter. My brother, whos in med. school, as well as my ped. told me about this, that its kinda common for babies, and eventually will fix itself.
I also have to wonder if 7 ounces for a 1 month old is just way too many ounces all at once. Michael is 6 months, and just started taking down 7 ounces at a time.
My ped. told us the best thing you can do is small but many feedings.

Re: She's Puking (again)....longish' but HELP!!
DD spit up BUCKETS for the first I would say 10/12 weeks. I literally would wash her swing cover and about 5 outfits almost everyday, It was everywhere and on everything CONSTANTLY.
The dr said she would just grow out of it and she did. She still spits up sometimes but usually only if I josyle her around a lot after eating
