Re: Should a 13 month old still be eating mostly 2nd stage food, baby food and yogurt?
by 13 months both my kids were fully on table food. DS would eat some pureed veggies because he loved them, not because it was his meal. they still eat yogurt.
but it's up to the parents to do what they feel is best

I'm not judging but just concerned because this is a little boy who's mother is a drug addict and his dad knows next to nothing about babies and kids. BIL lives with us because they are getting seperated and ny nephew is over a lot and I just feel like he may be behind bot just with food because of lack of knowledge and experience.

Re: Should a 13 month old still be eating mostly 2nd stage food, baby food and yogurt?
He should be introducing him to solids at this point. He can start with foods that disolve quickly like gerber or happy bellies "puffs" then cherrios and other small easy to chew not choking hazzard types of foods. He really should be exposing him to different textures and tastes to build experience with feeding skills and to prevent adversions to various textures and tastes. Feeding should be fun and exploratory in nature. Its fine to substitute purees to add variety, calories and nutrition, but soilds should be presented. The pediatrican can guide the dad in what the baby should be eating at this age. Did he go to the 12 month appointment? They often ask about what they are eating and discuss switching to milk at this appointment.

In that case I think your main concern should be that his primary caregiver is a drug addict. If that's really the case there is probably a lot more to worry about than him just being a little behind on eating table food.

I have made all of DS baby food, but I stopped pureeing it at 10 months or so. At 13 months he was eating basicallly table food. I think it does depend on the particular child. DS had 8 teeth from 8 months old so he has been chewing a lot.

I was a little paranoid w/ DS. He was 14 months before he started eating table food. I took a CPR class and felt better. He was fine. Not sure I brought it up with his doc. He's almost 4 and no long term signs of food withdrawal.

My ds did eat only that stuff at 13 months. He had strong gag reflex and at 3 will only eat fruit if it pureed.
Now my 17 month old eats like that but in addition to regular table food

Then I think baby food is the least if his problems

My DD was on baby food until she was almost 2. She ate the same things we did, but we still regularly purchased baby food. Heck, she's going to be 3 in less than 2 months, and she's ADDICTED to those Plum baby food pouches! I see no issue with it.

Honestly, at least he is EATING. And if it is baby food, etc, it is probably decently healthy as well.
My DC is a little older, but my ped had said that we shouldn't stop baby food until he was 1, so in my mind 13 months is not late, at all.
Lastly, babies have their entire lives to eat food, sounds like this isn't something to be concerned about.
