Packing my hopsital bag now and wasn't sure if I should bring a pacifier. Did you use it? Does Wintrhop still give those out? I feel like they did when i gave birth to my son 3 years ago but not sure now.

when I was at Winthrop they did not offer a pacifier. I didn't ask though.

I brought my own but I don't even think I used it in the hospital

Damn can these hospitals GET any cheaper?
Are they lowering what they charge the insurance companies and patients with all this cost cutting?

I just had a baby at Winthrop 5 months ago and I asked for one and they said they only had them in Nicu so she had to ask someone for one. I just asked my husband to bring me one when he was coming up, that was quicker.

So definitely pack oneChat Icon

BTW, good luck and best wishes!!

I really though it had to do with them promoting breastfeeding but you may be right. They didn't supply my bassinet in the room with many supplies.

At stonybrook, they didn't even mention a pacifier until I asked them to take DD to the nursery at night. Then they asked if I would consent to them giving her one if necessary. So I think they give them out only bc they want to keep your baby quiet in the nursery!

pack one to be safe
I delivered at LIJ and they dont give them out...even if you ask.
I got one with ds bc they needed him to see the cardiologist and they gave one to help soothe him during his tests. when i asked why i couldnt get one earlier, they said they only give them to NICU babies or cases like mine when they need additional testing

This is why the nicu babies all had them! They will spend the money when it makes it easier on them.

Should I pack a pacifier in my hospital bag? Do they still give those out?

at north shore they gave DD a pacifier in the nursery without telling me and i didnt want her to have one. lol they said it was only for the testing to keep her calm. but she rejected them anyway. when i was at winthrop 6 years ago they gave me one.

BUT...they only offer the Soothie pacificers and I personally like the NUK ones. so if you like soothie then they should have them. if not bring what you like.

When I gave birth to DS nearly 3 years ago I asked for one and they gave it to me (soothie pacifier). This time around I heard that they no longer give them out so I am bringing my own

ETA I am delivering at Winthrop

Had my second DD at Winthrop at the end of May - I asked for one and they said no. The nurse said, "I'm sorry, we are a baby friendly hospital." This was at 3 in the morning. I seriously could have punched her in the nose. My husband went and got one for me - so I guess I'm not baby friendly. Chat Icon I had a great experience at Winthrop though - my own room and great doctors and nurses. This was the exception in terms of my experience.

DD2 was given one at LIJ (born in February), but she was in the NICU. When they wheeled her up into my room 2 days later, I fully expected the soothies to be gone, but they weren't (and there were some in the drawer of her isolette).

If anyone had said that to me, I would have LITERALLY punched her in the face.
HOW is a pacifer NOT baby friendly?

But what if you aren't breastfeeding?
Then what?
How about them apples?
LOL

Trust me- all of this "baby friendly" shit has nothing to do with breast feeding.
It has to do with saving a buck.
Less formula
Less pacifiers
Less staff in the nurseries at night.

It's all Bullshitt

Winthrop wouldn't supply the paci 2 years ago. I had to send my dh out for them.

Winthrop only gives out pacifiers if the baby is in the NICU. Reason why they only give NICU babies is because most preterm babies have difficulty sucking and it helps promote sucking. Bring your own. Also you may want to bring your own undies since our policy is 1 per day of the mesh disposable but you may get a nice nurse that may give you more than one but for the most part you only get one.

This is true. It's all about cutting expenses so they monitor everything and document in your chart(know this for a fact at Winthrop).

Wtffff?? I would have asked her if she ever heard of the studies on how they help prevent SIDS...then I would have punched her.

And even if you are BF there are schools of thought that say pacifiers wont hinder BF.
