Sick Child/Daycare Question
Just wondering, for those who have no family nearby, who watches DC when he/she is too sick for daycare? Are there any agencies that have sitters who will watch sick children? May sound silly, but I have no clue.
Today I brought DS to daycare. He had no fever, but a cough and slight runny nose. I would have liked to keep him at home to be honest, but DH had a presenation at work today, and I was (unexpedtedly) the only one at work today. I work in a service field, and I'm also new at my job, no sick time. So calling in sick myself is not a good option. The mom friends I have in the area who can help out here and there aren't going to want to watch a sick kid.
TIA, and I hope I don't get flamed. But we were between a rock and a hard place today. I'd like to handle it better another time.

Re: Sick Child/Daycare Question
I'm curious about this - b.c I will be returning to work some day soon and DH has very few vacation days - and I know I will be in a similar position.

Re: Sick Child/Daycare Question
I just saw an older post on this same topic, not many suggestions other than family or taking off work. Which I would totally do if I was not on probation and had not already taken a sick day two weeks ago for the same thing.
One poster noted most parents in the UK get some time off for this sort of thing, which sounds marvelous! We so desperately need that in this country--neither DH or I have this benefit. Curious to know if anyone else does?

Re: Sick Child/Daycare Question
DH and I usually weigh who has "more important" things going on at work and then decide who stays home.
There are times we cant budge either of our schedules so we call my dad.
If my dad cant come we usually try to find someone else but they have gone to daycare with colds...just not fevers

Re: Sick Child/Daycare Question
It is the hardest part of being a working mom. I don't have ANY family to watch the girls. When a good friend of mine was out of work, she would oblige from time to time. Otherwise, I either work from home, or if they aren't TOO sick, just a little off, I'll actually bring them to work with me, which is acceptable (thankfully). If it weren't for the extreme flexibility with my agency, I don't know what we would do really...

Re: Sick Child/Daycare Question
We rotate
Its either me or Jim. We've even once had to share a day - half him and half me.
Especially in NY when we had no one around, we would just wing it. And yes, that means we sent AJ to daycare under the weather but not feverish. Maybe once or twice at most? It was hard to know when she was really sick, suffering from allergies or beginning another ear infection. Ugh
I can say that she seems to ALWAYS get sick at the worst possible time work-wise! haha
But I figure the office I work with has lots of people who have kids, everyone just sorta 'gets' it. I also work via remote connection as much as I can when I have to stay home and I answer all my voicemails and emails too.
Today AJ went to school with a very slight, very occasional cough, drainage, sneezing. Yesterday she came home with some pale green mucus but once I wiped it away it never came back. She suffers from allergies, as do I. I am dying right now, so it doesn't surprise me that she's suffering too.
I always figure NO ONE has a right to judge our actions as mothers. We do the very best we can with what we have. I'm lucky I have a husband to help at all, even if its only a little (which isn't true, he does a lot) ... I can't even imagine what I would do if I were a single mom with no family around. we all do what we need to do, it works for some and not others but it gets done.

We do the same thing.
DH is a corporate trainer and travels for business. If he is home and not training, he usually stays home because I HAVE to stay home when he is traveling or does have a program since there is no back up there.
However, I manage a large department and I'm "high up" so I can't bang out sick days left and right (with 2 kids, it feels like someone is always sick, poor things).
So-I don't take sick time for myself. I've taken 1 sick day in the last 3 years and it was because I was throwing up. I save my call outs for my kids-I'll drag myself in almost dead if I have to.
Also, for a cough/cold-the kids go to day care. When they are older, they will go to school. I'm not big on sick days unless you are really sick so unless my kids have a fever, a virus, flu-i.e. something I consider a "real" sickness, they will go. No one in my family stays home for the sniffles
I'm also lucky that I have a wonderful boss-he knows my work ethic and does not give me a hard time or make me feel guilty when I take time for the kids. If the kids meet my qualifications for sick-we stay home, and that's that.
For me, this is the toughest part of being a working mom. Obviously the kids come first, but it's hard to know when it is just the sniffles vs. when it is something more. You don't want to send them in in pain but you don't want to keep them home for nothing (wasting a sick day and not teaching them to "play through the pain" when it's really minor-excuse DH's sports analogy)

We do that too - my job is more flexible so it's more often that I just work from home or bring them to work with me, but when I absolutely need to get something done, I head into work ridiculously early (6am) and work until 12pm, come home and then DH goes to work and stays late.

Re: Sick Child/Daycare Question
i've stayed home, or DH has worked from home.
my old job used to have something called Life care..i think, and it had back up emergency care. i never utilized it though b/c i was only back at work a few months after DS when i quit a few weeks ago.
maybe there are sitters in your area for just emergencies. maybe check sitter city.com?

Re: Sick Child/Daycare Question
Oh and I wanted to add.. here in TX we have a place called "The Wellness Place" .. I paid $25 holding and app fee. They will take AJ if she's sick. Its a sorta daycare for sick kids. They are separated by illness then by severity. They are entertained, medicated and monitored. The caretakers are all certified to deliver medical care to children. They also have a pediatrican specifically on call for them as well.
It would cost me $50 for a full day of care. I haven't used that yet. But its nice to know its an option if push really came to shove.

Re: Sick Child/Daycare Question
Right now my DH is out of work and I can take time off if I need to. BUT - we really need to find a backup. My aunt can help us in a pinch bc she works from home but I feel bad especially with a sick kid. I need to find someone local who is willing to do that. Sorry I didn't help answer your question!

Re: Sick Child/Daycare Question
Unfortunately, it's almost always me that has to take off. It's the reason I have very little sick or vacation time on the books. The only person I know that is available during the day would probably never take him sick so I could go to work.

Yes, this was exactly the kind of thing I was wondering about. I can't locate anything like that in my area, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Our pediatrician might know actually, I should ask her.
Thanks for all the posts! This is the hardest thing about being a working Mom, though I am glad to see I'm not the only Mom sending my kid to daycare with a runny nose and cough (he had no fever, if he did, one of us would have stayed home). I wouldn't have brought him to a playdate like that, but then again, a playdate is different than daycare.
In time, I'll be off probation and I'll start to accrue some vacation/sick time so I'll feel more comfortable taking time off. But right now it has been DH, and he took 2 days off a couple weeks ago.
