Side effects from Children's Zyrtec?

I have given DS 3 doses of Zyrtec in the last 3 days... Going bed is a nightmare... I gave it to him earlier today, so I am hoping tonight isn't going to be so bad... Tonight he had a horrible, smelly diaper.. Which is not normal for him since he eats the same foods everyday.. Is that a side effect? He also has been drinking Gatorade so I am not sure if that has something to do with it. He never gets straight up juice.... The Zyrtec ha helped his allergies so much!

Did your DC have side effects from Zyrtec? Claritin only made him hyper if I gave it to close to bed. Never any gastro side effects..

My son's diapers have always stunk to high heavens... I never noticed that zyrtec made them any worse.

I haven't noticed any side effects and my son takes zyrtec every night (about 1/3 tsp).

Re: Side effects from Children's Zyrtec?

I have no idea if this is related since clearly I am speaking from an adult perspective but I was experiencing major major heart burn after taking zyrtec at night. At first I didnt realize the correlation until I googled it and found lots of other pple who had the same thing. I started taking the zyrtec in the morning and I felt much better through out the day.
Can you give the zyrtec in the morning instead of at night? Maybe it is giving him "heart burn"?

That is good to know! It happened to me a few times and I never put two and two together!! I have only been giving it in the afternoon and this morning I gave it at 1130am...
I think it was the Gatorade G2 that got him. Has artificial sweetener in it!

Zyrtec made my daughter hyper one minute, weepy the next. Changed her personality in a scary way. I wouldn't be surprised I have heard that several kids have issues with it. We use allegra in our house. No side effects for either child.

See, Allegra gave my son these type of side effects and I've heard about Allegra doing this with several children. He was horrible, totally not himself. We switched to Zyrtec and he has been fine. No tummy troubles, no personality change, no hyperness. We give it to him right before bed and he goes down without a problem. I guess certain kids just react to certain meds in different ways.

I think it is a medication and with any medication some do well some do not.

When we first gave our son Zyrtec a few years ago, he had horrible nightmares every night he was on it. We took him off it after a week and nightmares were gone. Pediatrician said Zyrtec is different than other allergy medicines because it crosses the blood barrier--no idea what that means but anyway we tried it again a few years later because other medicines really weren't working so well and he seems much better with it, no side effects so far.

Re: Side effects from Children's Zyrtec?

This was day four of being on Zyrtec.. He was a weepy, crying mess ALL day. He started with the whining on day 2 but it wasn't so bad. Yesterday it got worse and today if you looked at him wrong, he burst into tears.. So not like him And going to bed has been a nightmare!!! I have to put him in the car and let him fall asleep. Thankfully last night only took 6 minutes!! It cleared him up and he is feeling better allergy wise, but I am going back to Claritin tomorrow... Next time he is this bad with his allergies, I will try Allegra..
