silent reflux
my daughter is 7 weeks old and I believe she suffers from extreme gas and possibly silent reflux. Can anyone shed some light on this subject. She she grunts, kicks, and passes loud manly farts all day long. Every time we think shes dead sleeping, we go to lay her down and she suddenly is wide awake. Sometimes shes fine during feedings and has a normal 2-3 days..then at other times she cries when you try to burp her, cries as you put the bottle back in her mouth, arches her back, and sometimes makes a weird gurrgling/barking noise but doesnt spit up at all. When she is sleeping shes restless, and during the day she cat naps for about 15-20 mins. Screams bloody murder for diaper changes and baths. However, she is gaining weight. Does this sound like silent reflux? Other? So far i tried: Similac Advance, Gerber Good Start Powder, Gerber Good Start RTF, Similac Sensitive, Gas drops, gripe water, crib wedge, playtex bottles w. liners, dr. browns., born free, oatmeal cereal in her formula, bicycle kicks, massages. As you can see..I'm a total mess and in need of advice. I cant take the screaming crying anymore..she claws at me as if she is asking for help

Re: silent reflux
Poor baby (both you and her)! It sounds like it could possibly be silent reflux. My daughter went on medication (Axid, then Prevacid) for silent reflux, but also ended up having a milk protein allergy. She had no visible signs of it, but when the ped tested her diaper, it was positive for blood, even though it wasn't visible to the naked eye. I would talk to your pediatrician about this. Also, you might want to try Nutramigen or Alimentum to see if they help. My daughter ended up on Neocate, but a lot of kids do well on those formulas.

silent reflux
Dd was like that. She's going to be 4 months. We had a lot of the same symptoms. She is now on Zantac 2xs a day and Enfamil at formula. The dr gave us a script finally b/c we were there at least once a week switching formulas etc. she said there's no real way of knowing except to try the med. I think it has helped. We still have spit up and fits but not as often

silent reflux
DD was like this in the beginning. i raised the possibility of silent reflux to my ped but he said to give it some time and see what happens at the risk of prescribing meds unnecessarily. He said that all babies have immature digestive systems and experience some symptoms. Only those severe in nature need be medicated. So we waited. She's 5 months and doing fine now though she's still just a cat napper and restless sleeper. Don't know if this is the case for you, but thought it was worth mentioning.

Re: silent reflux
Do you think infants grow out of it without meds? Also, did you have feeding issues daily? Because my daughter has 2 bad days followed by 2 good days so I don't want to medicate if it really isnt silent reflux. Is there a test that can be performed?

silent reflux
First off Im sorry for you and baby girl to be going through this. It sounds similar to some things I went through my dd. I ended up putting her on Alimentum and Zantac, I had a brand new baby! =) My dd would do the same thing, 2-3 days ok then 2-3 awful days. There is no test for reflux that can be done, just symptoms. Try changing the formula first. IF your dd has any type of milk intolerance OR allergy, the signs mimic reflux and/or excerabate it. I was against the meds with my dd because she was so small, but she was in pain. They dont outgrow it until at least 6 months. My dd was off zantac by 6 months and is 1 now and still on alimentum.
Meds are scary for an infant, but you dont want her to continue to be in pain either. Zantac is mild. Also Axid is mild. My dd started on Axid then was switched to Zantac, she had a better response to it. But the BIG BIG thing for her was changing the formula. I suggest doing that and weaning her, mix it with her reg formula because Alimentum has a different taste to it.
I initiialy did 3 oz current formula to 1 oz alimentum for 2 days, then half and half, then 75-25 then 90-10 then 100% alimentum.
Always talk to your dr first Im a mom not a dr LOL But this is what helped my baby and a lot of my friends babies who were also suffering. Please feel free to fm me anytime.

Re: silent reflux
Ugh Im so sorry. I know how terrible it is! DD grunted while eating too and they tested her for milk protein. We put her on alimentum. She grunted in her sleep but didn't wake much or cry much so they said it wasn't a bad case of reflux.
She would spit up out of her nose and scream bloody Murder. Eyes popped out of her head and gasping. They put her on axid, gas drops and Maalox which seemed to help. She would also spit up entire bottles up til about 3 mo.

Re: silent reflux
dd had many of the same symptoms - she was a horror to feed & burp and a terrible sleeper. she was originally diagnosed with silent reflux and put on zantac. as things got worse, her medication was changed repeatedly. eventually we found out she had a milk protein allergy as well. the combination of axid 2x a day (same as zantac but tastes much better) and a formula switch to alimentum, has worked wonders for us. she still has a very sensitive stomach and can be finicky, but from where we were at 6 weeks and even still at 5 months, to now (8 months), dd is like a different baby. have you taken her to a GI? i'd recommend it. a good dr who actually listens to you can make a world of difference. dd was tested for the milk allergy 7x (through 3 different dr's) before it actually showed. I know the hell you are in, fm me if you need to talk. hang in there

Re: silent reflux
I'm so sorry your dealing with this- silent reflux is stressful! The symptoms you described are just like my DS. He gained weight and always wanted to eat because go his esophagus was so raw from the refluxing he always wanted to coat it with the milk. I think he was not in pain when he was actually eating but otherwise he was so miserable.
See a good GI-if you live in Suffolk I can recommended one nearby Good Sam. My DS needed prescription formula- ( he couldn't even tolerate BM) and medication.
Hang in there Mama- and trust your instincts.
